Those of you fortunate enough to have the flexibility (im working on it) to hit ATG Squats.. Can you ATG without weight on your back?
I seem to be able to get much lower and keep my balance when I actually have the weight on my back.
When I just squat, no weight at all practicing my form I dont get nearly as close.

I'm the same way, its pretty weird I thought. Whenever I try to do ATG squats without weight, I need my stance to be wider than if I was actually performing them. If I use the same stance I do when I perform them, it seems awkward and like I'm going to fall/can't even get that low. I have no reason why though.

Yes. Which is funny, because I have terrible flexibility (working on it). In fact, I don't tend to go as low with weight (still below parallel). I think the problem is that I stick my hips out too far and end up leaning forward too much, so my tailbone can't turn under, which should happen naturally at the bottom of the ROM.

LoL if I trained outdoors yes.
And to answer the thread... I do warmups 20 reps just the bar before I put on the weight and I always find it super awkward doing ATG with no weight. I think it's balance thing... it's like I need all that weight on my back to do ATG properly. I always feel like I'm going to fall foward at the bottom of my ATG with no weight. With weight that is not an issue.

If you want to get big, be good at the Squat, Deadlift, pull and bench press, the rest is between you and your dinner plate.
There are 10 types of people: those that understand binary and those that do not.

Most people are like this, because
a. the bar moves your centre of gravity forward, so you don't have to lean as far forward to keep your weight over your midfoot.
b. the muscles in your back can contract better if they have something to contract against, the same as your abs can contract better if you're wearing a good belt.
c. gravity makes things go down, and solves hip flexibility issues.
I never back squat less than 60 kg. That's my first warmup set because the 20 kg warmup I used to do was pointless.
