as outlined from the Yahoo article:
Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes
Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)
Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)
he's eating pizza and chocolate chip pancakes as an Olympic athlete? What do u guys think about this? I'm not sure that's really his diet during the most important contests of his career.

I'm a swim coach, and former HS and Collegiate Swimmer.
He is most likely eating a ton. I don't know if this is his actual diet, but it could be close.
From experience, 4 hours in the pool, plus weights, plus dryland burns SO many calories. My teammates and I used to eat tons of food during the season. We used to HAVE to eat some foods not considered "clean" just to meet our caloric needs. Not to mention, with that schedule, you can't eat 6-7 meals a day. The only way to go is a few calorically dense meals with some snacks in between.

In fact, this is part of what gave me problems staying lean later in life.
You get used to stuffing your face with that many calories to survive, it's hard to change. It becomes habit and habits become hard to break. After I stopped swimming, I am still coping with what is a "normal" serving size.
Going through such varying caloric needs in your life is tough.

Probably not.
I never counted when I swam. If I were to guess, I used to put away 5-7k a day when I had a schedule similar to Michael Phelps. We all used to.
Some people are shocked that he eats what we would consider "junk food". What most people don't realize is that you can't meet your caloric needs eating only chicken breasts, fruit and oats (if this is your lifestyle).

From an energy standpoint, absolutely.
For someone trying to loose weight, the only option is to put the damn fork down.
However, for me and many others the difference is what the different foods to to you.
Keto diets curb my hunger and allow me to eat like a normal person. Carby diets do the exact opposite to me. The more carbs I eat, the hungrier I become and the more calories I eat. For me, it's that simple.
No, I don't believe carbs make me fat and I know it's all about the calories.

Once again, the words directly from his mouth were 8,000-10,000 calories.

I got you, no need to hit me back.
I guess I see where you are coming from now. I never meant to give you the impression that I thought carbs were bad or made someone fat. I agree that calories are the main thing to keep in mind regardless of diet.
From a personal standpoint, keto just allows normal calorie consumption for those of us who are always hungry. For me, I enjoy the keto foods too. I've never been a big fan of the Carby foods anyways, so I don't feel like it's a huge sacrifice.
I do believe that if you are maintaining you can get away with a few more calories on keto, but this is purely based on experience. I wouldn't say it's a ton extra though.

Yep, teh suxzorz.
Although, I do believe as I loose weight, my sensitivity gets better. This has gotten me before though. It improves with weight reduction. I eat carbs again (probably at maintenance), I notice no problems for a while and keep doing it.
Then all the sudden............................................ ........ Oh snap, where did that extra weigh come from
