yea, i've already started buying extra canned food that i can just cycle through... but i wanted to have some long term food storage as well.
i only have 2, 50lb bags of rice so far. not sure if i should be keeping them in some kind of container... as of now they are just sitting in the original bags.★ ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑβΕ ★

PB is only as good as the expiration date and then a little longer.
In general polysaturated oils can last up to centuries... So like... Palm oil.
Olive oil is one of the shortest lasting oils, because there is residual chlorophyll in it that will react to light and cause it to go rancid. So Olive oil should be kept in a dark place and then you've got 6 months before all it's good properties are oxidized... And if it makes it to 12 months without going rancid you should consider yourself lucky.

On a side note... It's almost kind of worth it buy Harold McGee's "On food and cooking" just because he breaks down the science behind all the various food ingredients.6'4"

lots of stuff will last a long time if its freeze dried. You can buy it in bulk online. Provident pantry and mountain house are good names for this.
If you want to store dry goods you can do that yourself by following youtube tutorials and sealing stuff like rice or flour into mylar bags with oxygen eaters and then storing that in a 5 gallon bucket. Thats probably what you want to do with your rice. You can also buy some stuff from the mormons. I bought 5 cases of their rice, beans, wheat, oats and a starter kit that they sell online. If you have one of their centers near you then you can go in an can it yourself for less.
Its surprising how quickly food can stock up with little effort."I'm not like most girls." -most girls

BUY BOOKS... screw gold and silver or any other metal.. you think that stuff will matter when the government wont even let you out of the country?? they'll probably just confiscate it from you.. books on candle making, water filtration, trapping, gardening, etc. is the way to spend your money. If you download them you need to print them off because there wont be internet when SHTF.. you can always keep books..

gjdm.. you can always hunt and trap and grow your food.. I would rather spend my time learning how to maintain a productive garden than packing food.. there will be a time when you run out of food and you have to start growing and killing it.. you will always remember how to do whatever skill it is that you taught yourself in the past..

Yep... And not to just HAVE the books... But to learn and practice the skills in those books.
You'd be amazed as you learn all this stuff how many times you're saying to yourself "Damn, if I would have tried this before I would have brought X... Or... Next time I'll do Z to make it easier on myself!"6'4"

Haha, I'm sitting in the bar and i hear people talking about Doomsday Preppers saying how it's the dumbest show ever and knocking the whole idea of preparing for things. I'm just sitting here laughing to myself..............dumbasses.......

to keep positive here are some things i liked about the new Preppers show
1st guy: shipping container, weapon training, multi-tool (not the tool itself but the idea)
2nd guy: i approve the bug-in idea, (people should be avoided)
3rd guy: biodiesel, vegetable garden
4th guy: hidden storage shed
i think thats about it

Here's an issue for some thought: I'm getting $1600 back from taxes this year. After my $650 golf membership, I could use the rest to pay down my last credit card, or use it for guns/ammo, gun safe, and long term food and water storage.............what to do, what to do.......

Yeah... I only caught the first half of the show with V-Day and all...
After seeing the whole pig demonstration I really want to get myself one of those "Grovels" or whatever he called it. I was totally when he cut a pig in half with little shovel blade!
I was totally grooving on that guy right up until he put his thumb over the end of the barrel to clean a jam and basically blew his friggin' thumb off!6'4"

...
Check the legalities in your area etc... But a Cross bow might be a good idea.
In a situation where you're going to "Bug In" But you're still not in a huge urban area... You're not going to see as many gangs as you will 1-2 man scavengers going house to house.
Shoot a gun and everyone within' 10 blocks knows that your boarded up and otherwise abandoned looking house has people and supplies in it. But an X-bow is silent and you can lay in wait better with it etc...
Just make sure it's legal... And hopefully you have a regular daily life hunting use for it etc...6'4"
