He squirmed his way too far down a narrow passage that he couldn't push himself back out of. Many rescuers went in to try to save him, including a very small woman professional caver with the hope that her small size could get her close enough to pull him out. They did get close enough, had ropes on his legs and stuff as his legs stuck out on top of him. When they tried pulling him back up that way, he was too far down the hole to where his feet/legs kept getting rammed against the ceiling of where they were trying to pull him out.

In other words, their only options at that point were forcing him out while smashing his legs and back up/causing internal organ damage on his way out, amputating the legs and trying to somehow pull him out without them while trying to keep him from bleeding out, or keep fruitlessly retrying what already wasn't working. They were all useless options, and he was dead from the moment he got stuck. Imagine trying to do all of that deep within a fkn cave while trying to make sure nobody else also got stuck trying to save him.

I wonder why the authorities didn't seal up that part of the cave or something? The cave was open to the public, as this guy and his buddies went there for recreation. Either make sure the cave is safe for people, or don't allow the public to go there at all. With today's technology, they could send drones to map out these caves and find these kind of death traps

If he got down there, he should have been able to get back out. I keep hearing about the angle of this feet, but his feet would have had to angle appropriately to get in his position in the first place.

Edit: Okay, the illustration cleared this up. He was bent at the waist to get into the dead end turn and then the angle of the rope on his feet would just snap is legs.

This. It's nightmare fuel. But everyone has their own view of nightmare fuel. I love the open ocean, would absolutely love to go into a submersible to view the Titanic wreckage, but some people shudder just thinking about it.
