Square Enix Drops PlayStation Exclusivity

-This is despite the sales from Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Both of which are currently PlayStation exclusive titles.

Square Enix will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," it says.

Many of Square Enix’s biggest games have been locked into one-platform partnerships, like last year’s Final Fantasy 16 and this year’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, both out on a single system, the PlayStation 5. Even if that console is very popular, Square Enix now fully understands they cannot limit themselves to this strategy no matter what kind of relationship they’ve had with Sony.

Locking up third party deals is scummy as hell. If you didn't pay for the entirety of it's development, don't throw money at the devs to lock out other platforms.

In fact, the PS exclusive sales are the only reason they're alive right now.

No one wants to be exclusive to Fkn Sony anymore.

PC gaming is too big for these companies to ignore now.

I dont think this is true. If the game underperfoms on Playstation, by far is strongest audience, it will do the same everywhere else.

another thing that Square Enix should consider really is lowering the prices of their games. They're one of the companies who normalized $70-80 dollar games.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is almost $20 more expensive than Cyberpunk 2077, at least in my country's currency, and the size/scope of its content pales in comparison to the latter.

If they don't do anything with their prices, gamers will always wait for their games to go on sale before buying them. They don't realize than most gamers nowadays have a ton of backlog and they can just play the games on their backlog while waiting for other games to go on sale.

The games Square failed on the most were multi platform already lol.

They just haven't been making good games for a while.

The only reason they're even alive right now is due to FF16 and Rebirth. FF16 didn't live up to players' expectations and Rebirth is a remake of an old game so it's not the most exciting stuff. Both games also have horrendous optimization even though they were literally made for one console. We should have been blown away by performance and visuals in these titles.

I personally am more the market for their AA offerings, like Octopath or Tactics Ogre. It's a smaller fanbase but one you can count on pretty reliably.

FF itself just isnt that popular anymore. That problem exists regardless of platform.

They need to get back on the map with game that can get mass appeal. Unfortunately, I dont know if they can do it with a game that even resembles the FF we know.
