Hey, what is the consensus on lifting gloves? I have seen people make fun of them so I don't want to be the dumbass in the gym who wears lifting gloves but doesn't look like he lifts....but.... My hands are getting calluses and the bishes are starting to hurt. Today when I was doing stiff legged dead lift my grip was slipping and it was hurting. Also when I was doing shrugs and bent over rows I am starting to lose grip. Anyways, what is the general consensus on lifting gloves...are people going to clown me because I wear them or is there some other better option that I have not though of yet?
Thanks in advance for replies.

Toughen up.... If you are seriously complaining that your hands are hurting and 'beginning' to get callouses, weight lifting may not be for you.
The callouses are an adaptation just like growing muscles are.
In a personal note, I find the most disgusting thing in the world is shaking a mans hand, and it feels like a womans. Maybe a few callouses will do you some good.RAW lifts

Chalk is a good suggestion as some have said. (but some 'fancy' type gyms frown upon it). Start doing regular grip work and carry a towel to keep your hands dry otherwise. I only use chalk when deadlifting. Let your body adapt and the callouses will allow you to grip more without discomfort. It should only take a month or two.

I wear them and not because of any other reason than it feels better and protects my wrists when I wear straps. No fuks givin. Been using them since around 2000 and just can't do without.

I have a big emory board that's intended for filing off heel calluses, works well for keeping finger calluses under control and sanded smooth so they don't rip.
My gymnast friend used to sear his calluses with an old butter knife, he'd heat it up on the stove and go to work. That seems a little extreme though.

I worked as a guitar player player for 25 years and always wore gloves. The only crap I got was from this forum. Nobody in the gym ever looked twice. Now I don't make a living with my hands and lift at home so I do use chalk and it really helps more than gloves ever did. But gloves do protect your hands. IF YOU EVER FORGET THEM ON DL DAY YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Try holding over 600 lbs with gloves on dude.....watch glove rip into pieces along with your bicep.
Great example. Imagine someone coming to you to learn to play guitar complaining that their fingers hurt and they wanted to wear gloves so it did not hurt so much. You surly would explain to them that their hands would toughen over time and the tips of the fingers would callous...etc.
Why is weight training any different? Let your body adapt to stresses if you are going to regularly be doing it.RAW lifts

I used them when I first got back into working out. Once I started getting used to handling weights again and built som callous' , I quit using them. Agree with others, if you feel better using them for now....then use them. Don't let other peoples thoughts effect your personal goals or actions or you will be fighting against yourself.
He'll, I even used a bar pad for squats until I started getting used to the weight on my shoulders.

I would LOVE to see you shrug 600lbs!. You must be one strong mofo! Hell, I deadlift over 600lbs, bench over 400, and squat in the mid 500's and I dont shrug 600lbs. NOT EVEN CLOSE. What are your other lifts like? I would imagine your dead has to be close to 750-800.
Please post a vid of this! I think we would all be impressed. (even if you have gloves on)RAW lifts

It's seriously something I do routinely as part of my shoulder workout. Get at least a good clean 4-5 reps in before getting sloppy. Back + arms is my strong point and shrugs are great as a result. I can't deadlift more than 4 plates a side on a good day, and my max bench is 275. Just blessed with trap genetics.
Was considering bustin out the phone and filming for my 30+ crew brosephs in the other thread.*LEO crew*

I know they did work up to 495. They slip at 525. I can see them shredding at 600 but I never got there. The difference is you can't play guitar with gloves (well, actually I have to prove a point to a bar owner) while you can lift weights with gloves. I agree it's much better now using chalk. But when I needed my hands to make a living I did what I needed to do. Like I said, no one at the gym ever said a word if they even noticed. But that was the late '70s, early '80s. Now with the internet I don't even have to be married to be told everything I ever did was wrong.

If you are lifting heavy enough to be thinking about gloves it is probably time to leave pf.
That being said, try chalk before gloves.

Please post a vid by all means. I would be amazed to see it. That is pretty incredible. Hell, that is really a feat. In fact, I am not sure I have EVER seen a guy properly shrug that much weight. Even some of the super heavy weight (over 275lb) powerlifters at my gym that total over 2000lbs. VERY VERY rarely I see a guy able to properly shrug 495.RAW lifts

Hahahaha at some of the comments. I've used gloves before in the past and after a few month of wearing them, they're sour and torn up. I've gotten so use to not having them now. As I write this reply...I looked down at my hands and noticed the calluses lol. Oh well...
Like everyone above said...if you feel like you need them, buy them.

Dude wear what makes you feel comfortable.
If your hands hurt and you want to wear gloves then wear gloves, do you really give a f'ck what others think?
I don't wear gloves, but that is my preference, but if I wanted to for whatever reason I am sure as hell going to get me some gloves. I couldn't give two sh!ts what others think and if they have something to say, then let them have the balls to come up to me at the gym and say so.On the list for Bannukah

4 plates cold, then 5, then 6, my pr was hit last time at 595.
That's is also my bad, 595 is my top, not 600+. Still a great pr. I'll admit that my range of movement decreases at that point but it's still clean and I am not swinging around. Never recorded myself lifting before but I should get at it since you guys aren't the first to want to see this.
Give me some time to provide as shoulder day is a week away and I need a buddy there to film.*LEO crew*
