How important is knowing a programming language throughout CS? And are you better off becoming advanced in one language or knowledgeable in many, job-seeking wise?
What year in college did you learn a language? Is not knowing one before sophomore year pointless to continue that degree?
Is your current job strictly programming, and how is it financially? Seeing how programming seems to be extremely competitive under the threat of outsourcing.
Thanks.

This lol and my state is actually Dutch. But I am interested in what I could earn in the US. Might attempt to do an internship or thesis in the US.
Advanced: Java, Pascal, Android
Intermediate: C#, C++, PHP, SQL, HTML5, Javascript
I am aware some are not really programming languages. I will expand my knowledge to C and iOS this summer, perhaps earlier depending on how busy my next semester will be.
EDIT: Oh yeah and what I've built? A lot of Android apps, small to big java applications, a few websites. Made a clone of the Google Playstore this semester using Java/SQL/Servlets with an API, Android app, consumer website and administrator panel. That was together with 15 other people though, but it does work pretty well. My university will probably use it for students to upload their apps!
EDIT II: Any idea if you get paid during an internship in the US? Here in NL you usually don't get paid. I can fund a trip to the US for a few months but if I could actually break even I will definately consider it.Last edited by TallJJ; 01-26-2014 at 02:36 PM.

Programing is the single best skill you can get in the world right now....period. But do not be fooled, you have to be good at what you do and have to be good in logical thinking as you will be responsible to create and design new programs. I left school in my last year before coming back at age 29 to finish my degree. I learned PHP, .NET, Objective-C, Android like the back of my hand and built some cool apps and applications. That got me noticed I started making more money then almost my entire EE + CE graduating class because I wasnt going to stand for the bull**** the UC system puts their students through. I.E. get a degree and pay 25,000 a semester. THESE KIDS HAVE NO JOBS!
Dont worry about outsourcing, US employers want smart people who can code, not dimwitted indians with no people skills...Timah timah.... forty water....Sprinkle me mayne..

Cool I did a similar project with Ruby on Rails, I built a twitter + ******** clone with full functionality. Your on the right track, dont know what the dutch market is like. But you can make good cheese as a Android programmer. How is your Objective-C?
Do you have experience with Data structures?..Timah timah.... forty water....Sprinkle me mayne..

I am not trying to be cocky, I am giving my observations living in California. I am just saying EE is on the decline, and jobs are going down while Software is blowing up. Sure you can get a good EE job, and I had one in VLSI design but was frustrated with low pay and long hours. Software is ten times better than EE hands down.
