Saw a man fly fishing with his kid at about 13,000 feet, the mountain would have been the view from the other side of the lake, quite the trek through the marsh, settled for a cliff-esque view instead, wish I had gotten lower to the ground, so he would be more silhouetted against the sky instead of his chest melding into the background, but I am happy with it for my first attempt at photographing someone, and yes I did ask his permission, he "did not give a flying ****" so we're good.
I feel I may have made the image to dark, but I was wanting the silhouette appearance, any criticism?Rugby Crew

My OCPD makes me want the horizon line (or image altogether) to look more straight lol. But anyways, I think if you're going for the silhouetted look, you need more contrast. Yeah it does look a bit dark, so try making the sky and reflection brighter, maybe + Exposure, - Highlights, + Saturation.
Overall I think it's a cool image. Personally, I don't ask permission if I feel like they have no idea I was taking a picture of them. Not a lot of average joes know that a lens can go so wide. Afterall, 50mm mimics the human eye, and standard cameras/phones are about the same too.*****OFFICIAL MISC PHOTOGRAPHY CREW*****

I looked at tilting the picture some, but I don't notice it as is as being off, but I suppose it probably is a little bit, it is interesting what other people pick up on, looking at your own picture and having taken it, it is sometimes hard to see it objectively.
I like the "rule" stated in this thread before about asking individuals for permission, but not large groups, depending on what your focus is.
I had hoped to get some better casting shots but after I asked he got a bite and it took about 20 minutes before they were setting up to cast again, I had to get down the mountain, so couldn't wait sadly.Rugby Crew

Went to a Beard and Mustache competition yesterday.
Will be uploading a few dozen more to imgur album and posting link so I don't flood the page here.

Yeah actually, I was using a trial for elements, it expired, my previous contributions have been via elements, but started the trial today for Lightroom, I may end up buying a version, it seems more hands on than elements, I would rather go photoshop but the cost for what I am looking to use it for doesn't make much sense.
I think if his entire face was in focus, I would love this shot. Or atleast his eye along with the stache.Rugby Crew

Blue, if you are using lightroom there is a very good angle tool to straighten out your photos ...
Are you aware of it? It's using the crop-angle tool and it does a good job.
Hoping someone else can point out where it is...un fortunately i'm at work and i can't get to it right now on the webs."Learn from Yesterday, Live for Today, Hope for Tomorrow"

check out the crop angle...
actually let me see if i can get a pic and try to explain it the best way i can...
this tool right here:
If you click on the icon you get a line, you put that on a line that should be straight (for your image for example, the horizon), and then it'll straighten it out from there."Learn from Yesterday, Live for Today, Hope for Tomorrow"

Agreed. Though I understand the context of it being a beard and moustache festival, portraits very rarely work if the eye is not the focal point. Considering the entire stache isn't even in focus, I would have liked to see the focus instead on his eye.
Still deciding how I want to kit up for the wedding coming up. I may just go with the 80-200 D700 on my Black Rapid strap and the 24-85 D700 on the normal Nikon strap, over my shoulder when I'm not using it.
Henry's has some of the bigger Think Tank Retrospective bags on sale right now though and I'm REALLY tempted as they seem like a great event photography bag. I have a Lowepro Slingshot that is just too cumbersome to use in that role.

Moving up or out? Neither am I generally. Its all to easy for people to overdo it. One reason vibrance was introduced and used instead. That said, it depends on the mood of the shot (its the same in film). If it fits, I can accept it. Agreed. The eyes, must be in sharp focus.

Going back a ways, but it looked over-processed to me. Dialing it back a bit helped a ton in my view. Again, this is all subjective.
Not if you're highlighting the mustache, which is the intent of mustache day. I like the shot and the way it's framed. Eyes don't always have to be in focus.*LF Chat Crew

I think its critical, in this case. Besides, mustaches don't sit in space, they're part of someone. But in this case, and with this framing the eyes are the focal point. That's where your attention will be drawn. Not the mustache. That comes later. But this is art isn't it? And each artist gets the right to make up their own mind.

Grew up on a farm 15 miles from a town of 700, two hours east from Denver, pretty isolated, wish I had the capabilities for those kind of photos, could pull some good shots out there, it doesn't get much darker, we have a valley out back where you lose near 100% of horizon lights.
But then people start worrying about the coyote howls and pitter padder of critter feet.Rugby Crew
