Communism could only be successful if the rulers were omniscient, which they never are. Marx did not appreciate just how difficult a problem it is to make all the decisions about what goods to produce and who should get them in a way that will make everyone happy. In a communist society, when the people are unhappy, there is no one for them to blame except the rulers. And since the people are usually unhappy, communist societies are fundamentally unstable.

2) They do get compensated for their work, but what they get compensated is a fraction of the value they create, while people who do not actually create the bulk of the value recieve the majority of the compensation through extracting from the labour of those that do. Basic common sense indicates this isn't a structure that serves the best interests of the masses.

Average net profit margin in retail industry in 2009: Less than 8%

Average net profit margin in food and drug stores: Less than 2%

Electrical contractors: 3-13%

Media and entertainment ~28%

Pharmaceutical industry: 16%

Oil and gas: ~6%
