    Better things to do
You cannot raise yourself up by putting others down. There is no real joy to be found in the misfortune of others. You have so many better things to do.

Those who resort to envy, gossip, spite and revenge primarily hurt themselves, though many others can, and often do, get hurt as well. Nothing of value is accomplished and the time spent on such negative pursuits can never be reclaimed, the damage never fully repaired. What a pitiful, tragic waste.

When you feel the urge to pull someone down, stop and ask yourself what it will gain you. Then turn that urge around. Redirect your energy. Find someone whom you can lift up. The value to yourself and your world will be infinitely greater. At every opportunity, put your precious time and effort where they will make a positive difference. You'll add true and lasting richness to your life.

    Find joy
Find joy in your work, and that work will bring abundant riches. Find joy in the people around you, and they'll lift you to incredible heights. Find joy in disciplined effort, and your accomplishments will be stupendous. Find joy in learning; your wisdom will carry you far and well.

Joy is not to be taken and hoarded. It is to be discovered and lived. Your joy comes not at someone else's permission or by way of their generosity, or at their expense. Your joy comes from your ability to extract and refine it from the perfectly normal and abundant circumstances in which you're immersed.

You can find joy in any moment, and you will be the richer for it. There's no need to wait for it. It is yours when you embrace it. And it is filled with power, with value.

Look for joy. Expect to find it. It is there. It is here. It is everywhere. It is yours to find, to build, to create and to live.

    Double your effort
Right now you can take one sure and steady step toward whatever you desire. It may not seem like much, yet for every step forward you take, you actually gain two steps. Why? Because at any point in time you have a choice. You can either move toward your goal or you can move away from it. Standing still is usually not an option. So when you move forward, you also avoid moving backward. That's a net gain of double your effort.

When you spend your time and effort today in moving forward, not only do you make progress, you also avoid having to play catch up tomorrow. Indeed, now is the time to act. The sooner you get started, the farther you can go and the more effective you'll be.

The choice is yours. You can act today and double your effectiveness, or you can wait until later and slice your effectiveness in half. This moment right now is yours to leverage in a powerful way. It's a great opportunity. Make it count!

    Now is the day
Before this day is over, you can make your world a better place.

Rather than spending the whole day pursuing comfort and avoiding inconvenience, get up and do something meaningful. Rather than just reacting to the random events that come along, focus on a particular goal and get it done. Instead of continuing to worry about something that needs to be done, just go ahead and get it over with.

Use your creativity. Exercise your mind and your body. Whatever you do today, you'll be tired when it is all over. Will you be tired from enduring the same old thing as every other day? Or will you be exhausted after a day of creative effort and accomplishment? Think of how refreshing that would be!

Today is already underway, and it will end all too soon. Decide to fill it with life. Decide to make it great. See for yourself how far you can go, when you make the most of today.

    Get results
Success depends on results. Not on your intentions. Not on your wishes. Not on how hard you "try."

Results are what count. When you consistently get results for others, you are in high demand. No employer wants to pay a salary, yet every employer is eager to buy results. No customer wants to pay the sales price, yet every customer wants to buy results.

Think in terms of results. Make sure that the end result is the goal of every action you take. What will be the result? Prioritize your efforts based on the results they will accomplish. Evaluate your actions based on their effectiveness.

What are you doing today? What results will that lead to? What could you be doing, that would be even more effective? Go for the results, focus on the results, work for the results, and you'll get them.

    You are more
You are more than the body you live in. You are more than the car you drive. You are more than the title on your business card. You are more than your past. You are more than your daily routine.

You are everything that you dare to imagine, filled with possibility. Your only limits are the ones you place on yourself. Think of the things you can do, the places you can go, the person you can be.

You are capable of greatness, of joy. You can love and laugh, create and build, think and choose, learn and grow, dream and accomplish. Now is the time to live your possibilities. Imagine how it could be, and go for it.

    Joyful world
Put some real joy into what you’re doing, and what you’re doing changes for the better. Put some genuine joy into the situation, and new, positive possibilities come clearly into focus.

Instead of assuming that you cannot possibly enjoy what you’re doing, find ways to add your own joy to it. Instead of expecting joy to be given to you, make as much of your own joy as you can.

Energize your moments by living them joyfully and enthusiastically. You can choose the way you relate to life, so choose to do it with joy.

Don’t poison your attitude by compiling a list of things that get you down. Commit yourself to lifting life up no matter what kinds of things might be going on.

By all means, live in the real world, and live with authentic joy. Be realistic and joyful at the same time, and your reality will get better and better.

This is a day, this is a moment, this is a life that could benefit from some real joy. Give some joy now, and as often as you can, and live in a more joyful world.

    Peaceful determination
We usually think of determination as a very tense state, full of anxiety. When visualizing oneself as determined, it is common to grit one's teeth and become tense.

Consider, though, how much more powerful and effective a calm, peaceful determination would be, free of tension and anxiety. Imagine the great things you could accomplish if you were determined and committed without being consumed by apprehension.

Realize that whatever happens is for the best when you are fully committed to being your best. Although life will not unfold in the way you imagined, that does not prevent you from being precisely the person you want yourself to be.

Your true essence is completely detached from anything which could possibly cause tension or anxiety. Live with that thought from moment to moment, and you'll enjoy a calm, peaceful determination.

    It comes back
See the beauty in the world around you. It will awaken and revive the very real beauty within yourself. Admire and appreciate the discipline and focus of others. You will become more focused and disciplined yourself.

Everything to which you pay heed in the world that surrounds you, resonates within yourself. If you envy and resent others for their success, that negativity reflects back on yourself. Instead, recognize and respect the achievements of others. Then their success will be a part of you, and you a part of it.

You cannot escape the consequences of a negative thought, regardless of to whom that thought is directed. Though you may be perfectly justified in being negative, look for the positive anyway. You cannot give without getting, so give the best that you have.

    What are you good at?
As often as you can, do something that you're good at. Even if it is not part of your job, even if it doesn't immediately advance your career or earn you money, do something that you're good at.

It will give you confidence. It will give you a valuable sense of satisfaction. It will give you practice at being effective. It will remind you of all your other accomplishments. It will get you in the habit of achieving, and will prompt you to expect the best of yourself.

Even more importantly, doing what you're good at will tap into the very real wealth that lies hidden inside of you. The surest way to accomplish anything, to reach any goal, is to utilize the best that is within you.

Regularly do something you're good at, and you'll get good at accomplishing whatever you want

    What's in it for them?
The best way to gain the support and cooperation of others is to ask yourself this question: What's in it for them? A sincere and substantive answer to that question is better than money in the bank.

When you can offer real value, you'll have no problem getting real value in return. Remember, though, that real value is more than empty promises. Real value is more than hype, more than the mere appearance of value.

Avoid focusing too much on what you're offering or what you need. Instead, consider what they're getting. What can you do to truly make it more valuable?

Who stands to benefit more than you from the achievement of your goals, and why? Great fortunes are made by people who can answer that question.

    The future you
The person you are to become, is always watching the person you are right now. The image you have of yourself tomorrow, depends on the actions you watch yourself take today. The confidence with which you live next month, will be based on the integrity of your actions this week.

You can hide and conceal things from just about anyone, but the person you are to become is always watching. And that person's opinion of you will play a major role in your life.

Will you be proud tomorrow of what you did today? Will your future self find strength in your present actions and attitudes? Will you learn from your mistakes and from your successes? The you of tomorrow is watching, waiting, hoping and depending upon the you of today.

Live each moment like someone is watching. Because someone is watching, someone who can make you or break you. Live so that the person you become in the future can look back with gratitude and admiration at the person you are right now

    Pay attention
When you look at the world through the fog of your own worries, your anger, your frustration and impatience, many valuable things will just pass you by, completely unnoticed.

Imagine driving through town while someone is holding a gun to your head. Are you going to notice the new flower shop on the corner? Probably not. Your focus will be on that gun.

Are you holding a gun to your own head, by constantly focusing on what's wrong with your life? Are you so obsessed with your own problems that you don't see the opportunities all around you?

Your attention can be effectively focused on only one thing at a time. Sure you have problems and challenges. Yet what is the point, what is the value of agonizing over them?

Pay attention to what's good about your life. Rather than worrying about what you don't have, seek to make the best of all the good things you do have. There are a lot of things right with your life. Give your attention to them and they will grow.

    Make the world sparkle
You are more beautiful than the most beautiful thing you have ever seen, because you are able to see it and appreciate it. What good is beauty, if it can not be enjoyed? The essence of the beauty is within you.

You make the world sparkle by your delight and participation in it. You bring the world to life by your living each day. You give meaning to the words of others by listening to what they say.

All that you experience is a part of you, and you a part of it. You're an active participant in the warm and shimmering reality of this day. This day, this world is yours and you are a vital part of it.

It is your experience, it is your joy, it is your responsibility. Live it to the fullest.

    One step at a time
It is often difficult to imagine yourself reaching a great achievement. You look at someone who has built a massive fortune, or created a magnificent work of art, or achieved a prominent leadership role, and you have trouble identifying with that person.

When you look at any great achievement, usually you can see only the end result. That's because the splendor of such an achievement overshadows all the little details that went into creating it. Yet the real substance of achievement is in the day-to-day details.

The person who builds a highly successful business does it mostly by doing the kinds of things with which you're already quite familiar -- talking on the phone, writing letters, paying the bills, buying new toner for the copy machine. The greatness in the achievement comes not from any supernatural skill or special advantage, but from persistence and commitment.

Great achievements are built day by day, step by step, by people just like you. Greatness comes from ordinary actions, focused on a specific objective, followed with steadfastness and resolve. Almost anything is possible when you are committed to pursuing it one step at a time

    It only works both ways
Part of providing value to others is making sure you receive value in return. For example, if you have a conversation with someone, and you do all the talking, neither one of you benefits as much as if there had been a give-and-take interaction.

Imagine what would happen if one of the major automobile manufacturers decided to give away its products for free. Initially, a lot of happy people would get free cars. Eventually, though, the company would run out of money. All the employees would leave. Suppliers would stop shipping parts. The company would no longer be able to produce any automobiles. In the end, the consumer would lose and the company would lose.

Lopsided transfers of value are never sustainable. It is in the best interest of everyone when value flows in both directions. Honor others by exchanging value with them. Don't cheat people by letting them take value from you without getting them to provide value to you in return. Don't spread the lie that there's such a thing by pretending to offer a free lunch.

Provide true, substantial value to others by making sure you get value in return.

    The voice of doubt
You say you're ready for the challenge, but in the back of your mind you have serious, nagging doubts. There's a little voice that keeps popping up, reminding you of your self-imposed limitations.

You may be able to convince the rest of the world, but if you cannot win over the little voice in the back of your mind, it will stop you cold.

The way to assuage that little voice is by sheer will and repetition. Every time it says "no you can't" you must immediately tell it "yes I can!" You allowed that little voice to take hold, and you have the power to change it.

In the past, you've told yourself or been told you can't do it so many times that your doubt has taken on a life of its own. Now you must give life to your confidence. Know you can do it. Tell yourself, over and over again, that you can do it. With enough repetition, you'll begin to truly believe it and the doubt will surely fade.

Change the cruel, whining voice of doubt to a resounding chorus of confidence.

    Power decisions
Add power to your decisions by acting on them immediately. When you make a choice to follow a particular path, start doing it right away, not by jumping blindly into it, but by taking the appropriate first step without hesitation.

Commitment comes from action. Deciding in your mind is not enough to seal your commitment. When you delay taking action, it becomes less and less likely that your decision will ever be transformed into reality.

Give power to your choices by giving them your efforts. There is always a first step to be taken, something that can be done right away. As soon as you start to act, you have created momentum. Once in motion, you are much more likely to stay in motion.

So don't just think about it. Get up and do it. Right now.

    Reluctance
If you are reluctant in your efforts, the results will come with the same reluctance. Anything that is attempted grudgingly has only a slight chance at best of succeeding.

Your reluctance is telling you something. When you are unenthusiastic about taking action, it means that you're really not committed to being or having whatever that action will bring.

You may say every day that your goal is to increase sales by 25% this quarter. You may even have put it on paper. But if you don't enthusiastically make the effort, day after day, to reach that goal, it is not truly your goal. You don't really want it.

There is never any lack of ambition when the objective is compelling enough. Stop following goals you're reluctant to pursue. Find ones that will keep you awake at night with excitement. There is something you really, truly desire. Let go of what the world expects. Touch your very own yearning. Allow it to fill you with ambition, and eagerly go for it.

    Connections
When you turn on a light switch, consider what makes that light come on. Behind that seemingly magical switch are thousands of miles of cable, electrical generating stations, towers, transformers, underground conduits and, most importantly, the countless thousands of people who design, build, operate and maintain all of it. And for every one of those people and every one of their functions, there are even more people who support them -- all behind a single light switch.

The things from which you benefit every day -- water, food, phone service, books, clothing, soap and more -- most of which you routinely take for granted, come to you through the effort and commitment of the other people in your world. In a very real and tangible way, on a moment-by-moment basis, you are intricately connected to the rest of the world.

Why, then, would you even consider doing harm to, or taking advantage of anyone else? How could you ever find satisfaction in the misfortune of another? We're all in this together.

It is tragically shallow to think that whatever appears to be in your best interest is truly in your best interest, if it causes harm to another. Keep in mind that you are connected to your world on many levels and in countless ways. Seek those things that benefit both you and the world of which you are a part.

    Use it now
Today will proceed right along, no matter what you do. You can't stop it, and you can't hold on to it. What you can do, is use it for all it's worth.

You can choose to put forth the absolute minimum effort necessary to make it through this day, and you will indeed make it through the day. Trouble is, tomorrow you'll end up right back where you started, with the need to make it through another day.

Instead, use today for all it's worth. Make the effort to make some real progress. You know what needs to be done. You know what you want to accomplish. Now is the time to do it.

Instead of "making it through" focus on "making it happen." Think of one little thing you can do today, that will improve all your tomorrows, and then do it. Surely you have the time and energy for one little improvement. Think of the difference it will make.

When you're already moving sideways, it doesn't take that much more effort to change your direction to forward. Today is here right now. Use it!

    Understanding
Keep in mind that every person with whom you come in contact today has a perspective that is different than yours. Though you have much in common with others, there are many differences as well. Even those who agree with you have a different perspective than your own.

No one else knows exactly what you know. No other person shares your unique set of experiences, just as you do not share the exact same experiences as anyone else.

Your success in working with other people will depend largely on the degree to which you are able to understand and consider their unique perspectives, and on your ability to make your own perspective understood.

Your knowledge, your experiences, your opinions, your assumptions are not necessarily shared by others. Make the effort to sincerely understand, and to be understood. It will add value and effectiveness to every undertaking.

    Miraculous
Every moment is a miracle. Though we often take this world and this life for granted, the fact is that we exist, experience and even thrive against unimaginable odds.

You're already a winner because you are here today, living and breathing, capable of making decisions, thinking thoughts, taking action and accomplishing great things. A whole miraculous universe is available to you here in this moment.

Those people who are able to tap into just a fraction of their potential enjoy stunning levels of success and achievement. Imagine what would happen if you were to do the same, right now.

Though you've made mistakes, though others may have hurt you, though you may be weary and filled with regret, still this life is full of positive possibilities for you. Step back for a moment and look at the whole picture. Consider the boundless magnitude of your good fortune. Live every moment as if it were the most miraculous thing you could ever imagine, because it is.

    While you have it
You have exactly one opportunity to make today the best it can be. Once the day is over, you've either made the most of it or you haven't. You've either made use of it while it was here or you've let it slip away.

One day may not seem like much. After all, there will be others. But unless you respect and value each day as it comes along, even enough days to last a dozen lifetimes would be of little use.

Today is yours right now. Use it to get things done. Use it to make a positive difference. Use it to change your momentum for the better, or to maintain the forward direction you've already established. There are plenty of things to do. You know what they are. Today is here for you to use.

The most gnawing regrets are for things not done, for actions not taken, for opportunities not acted upon. Don't set yourself up for regret today. Get busy! Use it while you have it, and tomorrow will be even brighter.

    Getting your way
Is the desire to get your way, actually getting in your way?

Often we're so obsessed with getting our way, that we miss out on the good things that life has to offer. We whine and complain about insignificant details, and life just passes by without us. We might win the battle of the moment, but in the long run we lose.

Happiness is not defined by always getting your way. Sure, you have things you want to accomplish, things you want to have, things you want to be. But remember, fulfillment does not always come where we expect to find it. The things we desire will come, though not necessarily in the ways we anticipate.

Don't be so obsessed with getting your way, that you lose the opportunity to have what you really want.
