did you find smolov useful for your olylifts?

everyone i talk to says after smolov their classic lifts went up to

then i walk onto pendlay forums and everyone says smolov has no carryover to the oly lifts

It depends where you're deficient as a lifter. If you have good technique but weak legs, yea it will help a lot. But that's hardly ever the case for newer people.

Good, I was thinking it was either that or it's because some of them completely ditched the oly lifts while running Smolov...

clean is neck to neck with my front squat

There are people who say you can't do anything else when you're doing smolov. **** that ****. People need to nut up.

In the case that your front squat and clean are about the same, it's fair to say: front squat more=clean more for you.

Tried to get on that Thanksgiving Crushing Weight Train, but... nope. 24 Hour Fitness while visiting my parents - don't even have my shoes and felt awkward as hell squatting with my heels on change plates. (All that being excuses for my weakness lol)

What was funny was this guy doing hang (arm) Cleans and grunting like hell before his last rep, dropping the Iron plates on the floor loud enough that people would look at him. Then he busted out the Thrusters and it was just too much to watch.

What is too tall far a 69kg?

    I'm 173 which is apparently 5'8

I'd have to be pretty lean to go 69 but it wouldn't be hard, I've been trying to pack on weight to get up near 77, as I generally sit around 71-72

    Thoughts?

Edit- I'm up to about 74 but probably 13-15%bf, I like to be a bit more aesthetic

What kind of mobility work would you guys recommend for someone who has inflexible shoulders and how often?I can't even do an overhead squat with an empty bar, I lose it forward long before I even hit parallel.

roll a lacrosse ball over that area between your shoulders/chest (lol anatomy knowledge = zero), then do some shoulder stretches with rubber bands

I don't have a lacrosse ball and rubber bands(would buy them, but there aren't any in my city/country), are there any alternative solutions?

erm...maybe massage/roll on some hard ball across said area + use a broomstick to do shoulder dislocates (personally don't like them though because i feel like it forces your shoulders to rotate rather than smoothly but they kinda work)

    edit - what country?

I've considered running Smolov. It doesn't look THAT bad. Definitely not when you are accustomed to squatting so frequently and your squat style is so low-impact anyway, mainly hammering the quads which recover really fast. Why do people keep saying it's tortorous? If if I was running Smolov I would keep doing the classic lifts with decent frequency because, well, this is weightlifting. I'm assuming it's completely doable?

Start with a wider grip if it feels forced and do some rotating/stretching beforehand. I've found that I'm not as open as I should be if it feels forced and it probably shouldn't be anyway.

The last thing I do for mobility before lifting is Sotts press behind the neck with an empty bar, starting extra wide grip and working my way in, because it forces your shoulders to rotate properly to press overhead from the Squat position. BTN Presses standing into an OH squat allow you to unknowingly cheat the rotation if you aren't getting proper activation, which leads into my next thing:

Several pages back, where I and others were seeking advice about shoulder impingement, I posted some stuff about scapular activation drills that help open up your shoulders and thoracic spine (upper back) more effectively when done immediately before your shoulder mobility exercises.

Hope some of that helps. A lacrosse ball is great, but anything that is dense and of a similar size will work just fine for your chest/front of shoulders

Thanks man, just used a broomstick, I have to use a really wide grip, but I'll work my way down in a few weeks hopefully.I'm from Serbia, lacrosse is not a popular sport here.

I'm curious about this as well. Like some others, I didn't take enough advantage of the linear gains early on and I can only seem to get them from an LSUS style of progression... haven't tried Smolov yet since I have been so focused on volume in the classic lifts improving my technique and all anyone has ever said is that the two do NOT go together.

Thanks for the thorough answer.I'll try those out when I attemp to do snatches next time.

the problem with the broomstick is that at some ranges of motion it's easy, at others it's forced, so if you take a wider grip some will feel easier than others, not as effective as something with rubber material where you'll get a more even stretch throughout

Hmm... perhaps do several more slow, controlled reps of dislocations at the wider grip? Perhaps you are rushing to narrow your grip as you go through it and aren't really controlling through the ROM, more swinging, which means your rotator cuffs are getting an insufficient stretch. This would explain why it is drastically easier at the wider grip and feels forced when you go in.

Just a thought. Bands are definitely more comfortable, I just don't have any.

You ran smolov Jr at one point right? Would you recommend going through that once before giving the full program a shot?

Also, how did you program your days when it comes to the lifts vs squats? I mean like what times of day and such, or if you think there could have been a better way after your experience?

Also - did you guys who did Smolov do any specific type of back-off work? Or did you just cut it after the prescribed sets? Seems like back-offs would just kill you with extra unneeded volume...

that is what i ran. i ran 2 smolov jrs at once. ive never done the full program. I lifted every 12 hrs. I would lift at around 11-12pm and 11-12am. it didnt really matter to me how i paired up the lifts, i knew i could handle the volume.

Honestly man, i would just do something simple. get used to squatting everyday first before a smolov or a smolov jr

Ok cool, that's good to know. I've experimented with more squatting lately because I am recovering much better now, so I will probably ease myself into a Jr. and see how that goes. Thanks!

Oh yea I know! I just wanted to try one. I researched a bunch of different squat programs and Smolov is the only one that I REALLY wanted to do, but I figured it best to hold off on the full program for a good while.
