Depends on what you mean by widespread, but not really.

It is a commonly followed tradition by some, but I will break it down:

Most families with children have the wife at home, this is a very high percentile, you are usually looked down on otherwise.

Among those families more than half dont use the pocket money system.

Many that do make a mutual decision on their budget.

Those that dont and have the wife as the accountant may have these 3-40,000 pocket money limits.

And this money is what the husband spends on whatever he wants for himself. This money does not count family expenses.

So not everyone uses this system, the majority dont, and even then, the amount is understandable for a family that does not want to live paycheck to paycheck.

People criticizing a family that keeps a budget and saves money to live comforrable seems strange to me.
