Well, just because it has 1,000 lumens, that doesn't mean you have to use it when your eyes have adapted to the dark. Lots of output is nice sometimes, like outside, particularly when there are other light sources in the area to overcome. There are very portable EDC lights with upwards of 1k lumens, of course. And you don't have to use the max output when you don't want it.
No you don't want to buy one of those...that marketing for those chinese POS lights that make outrageous claims....SMH. BRB an 18650 battery with 4500 mAh capacity powering a pocket light with 3500 lumens. lolokay
But hey when I got into this in 2006 the "bright" light was a Surefire 6p which was a little too big to really pocket and it made either 65 lumens for an hour or 120 lumens for 20 minutes on the super high output optional lamp assembly lol

Jou got it mang. Easy to think it's unnecessary until the day you're stuck in a house without power or break down somewhere.
Unless you need something blazing away at high power for extended periods or are set on using AAs I'd get the Olight S1 because it's something you'll carry everywhere.
You can get a 10 pack of CR123s for a little over a buck per battery. When you consider how much you probably piss up a wall on the daily this stuff is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

Options for regular battery types and not the CR123 (if you just want something small and CR123 the S1 would do). 18650 is a couple steps up in performance but also tends to be larger lights and has more extensive battery requirements, kind of an investment.
Keychain 1xAAA, a $16 option: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-...1193321&sr=8-1
Large-ish pocket 1xAA but good performance: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Arch...1193353&sr=8-1
Very small 1xAA pocket light that would make a gear geek proud, excellent output, modes, tint, and user interface: http://www.zebralight.com/SC52w-L2-A...ite_p_138.html
Solid, mere-$25 1xAA pocket light https://www.amazon.com/Fenix-Flashli...1193781&sr=8-3

late too the party..but I'm looking for a flashlight for EDC, I've looked at a bunch of different ones and have noticed on a lot of them if you partially press the button it switches modes....not what I want. I went through some advanced training a while back and the instructor let me use his light and if you partially press the button the light comes on (you don't have to click it) this in turn allows you to just let off the button to shut it off. Does anyone know of decent light that will do this? Seems like they all have this stupid mode switch when you do that nowadays.
Cliffs- looking for a compact flash light that has zero modes and will turn on with partial button press.Lift light until you can lift right

What you're describing is a momentary switch.
I'd be looking at something like the Nitecore P12. It's not compact but would still fit into your pocket. Has a momentary switch on the tail and a side button for changing modes but of course you can set and forget the power level. 1000 lumens. Runs on 2x CR123 or one 18650. $49.95

Just my 2 cents, but for everyday use I don't see what the problem is with a clicky switch button that has modes?
If I double click the side switch on the Olight I talked about earlier it gives me full power. Click again and it's off. Idiot proof.
A tactical light is great for what it's designed to do but to me seems like overkill in a lot of situations. It's something I'd rather leave in the car or the house. For an EDC I want something really compact so I'm more likely to carry it all the time (which I do).

That's probably a good idea to have 2 separate one for tactical and one for EDC. I prefer a momentary switch for room clearing and such bc you can turn it on and off very quickly, but that's not necessarily something you need in a edc, probably better for keeping bedside.
Funny story...a few weeks ago I heard a big bang in the house....like someone kicked the garage door and cleared all the rooms in my house only to find it was a sonic boom from a rocket. Bangs like that get me on edge bc my truck was broken into a few years ago and for some reason the thieves banged the garage door afterward and took off.Lift light until you can lift right

I kind of want an Eagletac DX30LC2 (but 2600 mAh is kind of a puny battery capacity for an 18650 these days, wouldn't use just the one this link happens to come with)
http://www.eagletac.com/html/dx30lc2/index.html
https://www.amazon.com/Eagletac-DX30...1279137&sr=8-1
It has a forward clicky tailcap for momentary activation, and it ALWAYS comes on in max output...unless you hold the side switch while depressing the tailcap, in which case it turns on in the lowest output, and from there clicking the side switch changes modes. Not terribly long or large fro an 18650 light either, and it has a current emitter. It is tailored a little more towards throw (narrower beam profile) than flood.
The P12.
I have an Nitecore MT10A which has a forward clicky tailcap switch (allows momentary) but changes modes with buttons on the side. Comes on in the same output you turned it off at, or comes on in max if you hold the up button while turning it on, or comes on in the minimum output if you hold the down button while turning it on. Up/Down buttons go up/down through the modes, you don't have to go just one direction and circle back.
The MT10A is only BRIGHT (1k lumens or so realistically according to tests and reviews) if you use a rechargeable IMR type lithium ion 14500, but those are about $15 for a pair (need a charger, there are kits). And it will run on ANY AA battery out there, just not as blazing bright on the run of the mill battery types.
Here is a $65 setup with the light, an IMR14500, a charger for said battery, and one regular AA alkaline
https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-tact...1279412&sr=8-8
http://flashlight.nitecore.com/product/mt10a
Or just get this for a mere $36 and grab any AA batteries off the shelf (alkaline, NiMh rechargeable, Energizer lithium primary) and not worry about special batteries
https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Arch...7&sr=8-1-fkmr0
Or any of about 1,000 other options

I have a streamlight and a couple other "decent" flashlights sitting around, in addition to the mandatory original Maglite to beat perps over the head with.
But ironically, the one I use the most around the house is a freebie Maglite XL50 I got from a vendor at work. Only 200 lumens, but that always seems like enough for most things.
My other go-to is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-8...50+Polytac+LEDLast edited by VoxExMachina; 08-15-2016 at 11:31 AM.

Don't make fun of my 2 incher.
Plenty of great advice in here but my two cents is there's no point buying a tactical light as an EDC and then leaving it at your desk or in the car when you're wearing a suit for example. It has to be with you all the time.
The S1 is my pick simply because you're more likely to carry it everywhere. Even Darinaldi in his skinny hipster pants could find room for it.

Honestly I kind of like that little S1 for two reasons: the single battery size (i have other CR123 stuff), and the magnetic tailcap. Really handy to be able to attach it to something you're working on. Seems perfect for the car.
I don't really carry a flashlight all the time since I have them all around the house and one in every car, and I'm not terribly worried about a meteor strike / earthquake / supernova / yellowstone supervolcano / alien invasion / SPECTRE.☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.

That's why for most people I think a tiny, twisty operation only, 1xAAA designed for a keychain is a great choice.
And why I have this on my keychain as a backup light lol
