CHARL1E85's Top 10 2014 Pt 1
Hey guys,
Sorry for not posting for ages. I've had this list half done for ages but never got around to finishing it. But seeing Bob and JungleJenetics Top 10's reminded me to put it up. Disagree Bob - I thought 2014 was an excellent year for hip hop. Couple on here you didn't mention, which I highly recommend checking out. Descriptions for top 5:
1. Mr Troy & junclassic – Thinking Out Loud
jun Ma-****in! I’ll be honest I downloaded this album based purely on the fact it has Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the cover with a mic and a MPC – curiosity piqued! But a quick listen and that’s exactly the kind of rapper veteran junclassic is, one who is happy with his own style and doesn’t give a f@$k about appearances. Teamed up perfectly with Mr Troy from France on production. Very ‘drum machine’ sounding beats that are as catchy as junclassic’s lyrics. I listened to this non stop all year. Not one skippable song on the whole album
2. L’Orange – The Orchid Days
This guy took out my no.1 last year with Stik Figga, but this year is back on his own and on another level. This album is more of a listening pleasure. Something you sit in front of the fire, put on and marvel at the sample content and they way he keeps you engaged track after track. Great support from Blu, Homeboy Sandman, Jeremiah Jae & Billy Woods! Is onboard with Mello Music Group this year so expect even more to come. This is L'Orange's equivalent of 'Donuts'
3. Diamond District – March On Washington / March On Washington Redux
Could really have been no. 1, 2 or 3. ODDISEE & yU could be 2 of the most talented artists in hip hop at the moment and throw in Uptown XO and you have an elite trio. Been waiting years for this follow up to my favourite album of all time – ‘In The Ruff’ from 2009. Added the remix project that has beats by a who's who of elite beatmakers
4. 1978ers – People Of Today
yU again! I didn’t think I was a fan of Slimkat’s production, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. A perfect pairing of two guys on the same level on every track. Not your traditional head bopping hip hop, but damn catchy as they explore multiple genres with a hip hop feel. An amazing project
5. People Under The Stairs – 12 Step Program
Downloaded a rip of this, listened once then went to Bandcamp and paid for the album. You just gotta support music this good, especially when these guys have been putting out quality music for 20 years! Production and rhyming on point. Some of the change ups, especially in the track Ste. For Reefer which changes 3-4 times are amazing

CHARL1E85's Top 10 2014 Pt 2
6. Dag Savage – E & J
Came out so early in the year it’s easy to forget this one on the list. I was bumpin this on the way to work non stop for weeks when it came out. Producer Exile isn’t quite underrated, but doesn’t seem to get talked about amongst the elite group of producers. When you think of his work with Blu, Fashawn and now with Johaz he really is one of the best underground producers out there. Johaz is pretty solid too, not the most lyrically gifted but an has an undeniable style and flow. Californian hip hop at it’s best
7. Dilated Peoples – Directors Of Photography
Super unlucky not to be higher up this list. Could easily have gone top 3. Been a long time coming and did not disappoint. What I love about this album is how true they stayed to their roots. These guys haven’t changed their sound one bit! And that’s awesome! Evidence hands down one of the best rappers alive and Rakka is as smooth as ever. Production by Alchemist, Preemo and Ev. Nuff said
8. The Other Guys - Seeds of Ambition
9. Raw Poetic & Kev Brown - Concentrated Maneuvers
10. Willie The Kid & Bronze Nazareth - The Living Daylights

what up guise. ive gotten into producing some tracks in the last half year of so. recently had a good friend (one of my best friends actually from when we were little kids) jump on a track I did along with a couple of other dudes he knows from NY. Turned out pretty cool for doing it on the fly.
anyway, the first dude on the track and myself are working on an EP, should be an interesting project. dude is crazy talented, we've been friends since we were 5 srs. we've recorded a handful of other tracks.
once we get it completed ill post a link to the EP.
let me know what you think. later brahs

Joey dropped a new tracked produced by Kirk Knight and it's pure flames. The production is so sick.

Sorry for posting this here homies! Couldn't get any response in the other thread.
Hey guys, not really familiar with this music and it's labels so I don't know what this is considered but I am looking for a link to these mixtapes. It says they are free for download, but the link on soundcloud just keeps taking me to their ******** page with no link. Any help would be appreciated.
What are you on about mate?

I actually really like the album now I've listened 4, 5 times. As a whole, I think it's a great album. Sure if you're looking for a couple bangers to pull from it, probably not gonna find many.
The first track is f*cking dope. I don't know how I wasn't feeling it much after first listen. I like King Kunta too, but having listened to corny ass Rosenberg (no hate, but he is corny as f*ck lol) talk about it, it fell short of his hype, but it's still a good track IMO. Not really feeling institutionalized, I find it hard to listen to, but that's the only one.
The thing I feel is missing, which is what disappointed me the most, is Kendrick spitting in a normal voice aggressively. I think that is a strong point for him. The topics are perfect for it, but it wouldn't fit in with the production and the feel I'm getting from the album. I've never really been a fan of these little voices and sh*t, but I feel it just fits the sound of the album this time round. The production for me stops the record being too depressing, it's dark most of the time, but It's real dark in places, and the funky, smooth production kinda counters it. I think it's a good balance. And something I noticed too, it actually sounds like a West Coast album to me for the most part, long time since I heard that. The build up across the record to the 2Pac thing at the end of Mortal Man was dope too, wasn't expecting that.
The key for me was judging this as a complete body of work rather than holding it next to Kendrick's other stuff. Not because it isn't as good, but because it is totally different.
Favorite tracks: Wesley's Theory, u, Momma (example of the weird voices he uses working), Hood Politics, How Much a Dollar Cost, The Blacker the Berry.
There's my opinion, can see why a lot of people aren't feeling it though.
