A photo from yesterday's hike. I went back out to the Sunrise Trail with my wife and a friend.

On Friday night, my daughter played with the local high school band during the football game. I got these photos during the game. I used a Sigma 50-500mm lens attached, via an adapter, to my NEX-7. It looks kind of strange having such a small camera attached to a big lens, but it works pretty well. The adapter is nice too, in that it causes it to focus more rapidly than the camera without the adapter. All of these shots were hand held, taken from the lower rows of the bleachers.

I had the lens all the way out at 500mm for the next two shots.

This was my first try at sports photography. I got quite a lot of shots showing a play in it's early stages. After all, I was was able to focus on the QB and get shots of the ball being snapped, etc. It was a lot harder to get shots the results of a reception, interception, etc.

Nice shots KBKB. the only photos I take are off my girls playing soccer. I find that the easiest wat to get the unexpected shot (as in a reception , interception, etc) is by opening up the field of view and taking a bunch of shots. Then you can zoom in and crop excellent shots later. I also subscribe to the machine gun method of photo taking, by taking as many photos as I can, and hoping to hit something .

Good point about using shorter focal lengths. I have done that in the past, though not with sports photography. More recently, I've been trying to frame the shot that I want in camera. It's a lot easier to do, however, both when using a shorter lens and when reaction time isn't an issue. I'll try going wider if I try it again.

I was definitely using the machine gun approach - I came home with nearly 1300 photos. It's easy to do when the camera can shoot ten frames per second. But the buffer fills up fairly quickly. I think I can take maybe eight frames (in RAW mode) before the camera has to start waiting on the buffer to empty.

!300 photos. Wow ! It's more than I've ever shot, if not for any reason other than getting caught up watching the games, lol.

KB - Nice multi-view shot on the trail. As to sports photography, it can take time getting down action shots. Have one kid that plays soccer, and have used a Canon f2.8L 70-200mm lens with success(as well as taking quite a few shots in burst mode, so can get a few good ones and a bunch of not so good ones.....) Have another kid that plays basketball, and use different lenses for that. Mostly prime, with pretty low f. 35, 85, 100 with f1.2/1.4/1.8 values.

    That's some fast glass.

The Sigma 50-500mm lens that I used is f4.5-6.3. I had it wide open for most of the shots. In order to use smaller apertures, I had to raise the ISO to 3200 or 6400 with a commensurate increase in noise. (I had it in shutter priority mode. For the football shots, I set the speed for 1/100 sec and let the camera pick the aperture and ISO. I think auto-ISO must have an upper limit of 1600 on my camera. I had to manually set it to the higher values in order to be able to use them.)

We do have a 70-200mm f2.8. Maybe I should've used that instead, but I wouldn't have been able to get as "close".

I don't own any prime lenses yet.

To me, I used to have longer lenses, which thought would serve me well by getting closer. However, as I grow older(and spend even more, unfortunately) for my desire, look towards getting fast glass, so as to not have to push the ISO. Bit the bullet a while back on the Canon L glass lens, and it has worked pretty good for me. Indoor action shots were learned the same way for me. Bought somewhat inexpensive glass, and thought I would need zoom action/etc. Think I gave away some of that stuff. Went the route of single size and fast. Then worked on getting in the right spot to take pics. Seems to have worked ok. My only wish was that I learned that years back, with both kids now in high school sports(as well as their club sports). Probably would have had better pictures when they were younger.

That's about all she wrote.... Powers out since 6pm, both my daughters have fevers, the wind is unbelievable. I have been watching the fireworks, about a dozen transformers have blown around me. Sparks and flashes of light, the surging of the electric violently humming in the night. It's going to be interesting in the morning.

I'm looking for some replacement pieces for the little black rollers sitting on the aluminum track. Does anyone know where I might find something that would work in a similar fashion. I think they are called track wheels, but not sure.

Belt rollers perhaps? Check the belt width on your bodymasters belts vs that track. You can get pulleys and rollers from Kamway.

Any of you fellas versed on hamstring injuries? I got a problem....

We were working out today and on the third set of GHR's my left hammy went "POP" about halfway up on the 6th rep. I didn't have a lot of pain, but there was an audible pop, a feeling like something just gave way in my leg, and a pressure that made me guard the use of the leg. I was able to get off of the machine without faceplanting....but the wo was done.

Its been about an hour or so and I'm not sure how to describe what I'm feeling. I can walk and have very good ROM in almost any use of the leg. It feels a little tender and kind of like its burning slightly deep inside. There is no palpable deformity, damage or bruising. The largest increase in tenderness is when I try to touch my toes (can only get about half way) and if I put resistance against the leg from the foot....like in a vertical leg press position (this is extremely painful).

I'm putting ice on it now and I'll consider going to the doc depending on how it feels later tonight or in the morning. I would think if I tore the muscle I would be in a lot more pain...but I've also never had any injury like this and I'm more than a little concerned. My wife is a nurse and used to work in surgery...she felt comfortable with the treatment plan and said that she had seen cases where there was a pop like I'd described with no serious injury.

Not looking for diagnosis via internet....I'll get it looked at if it changes much soon....just wondering if there's any general words on hammy injuries. I know they're common, just never had one and I'm not real happy right now.

i pulled a hamstring playing softball. it was a kind of pop as you described, almost felt like a rubber band breaking. i alternated heat and ice &gave it lots rest. as it felt better i did some light stretching working it through a full range of motion. it healed fairly quick and i never saw a dr. it was close to a month before i could do anything more than stretching or bodyweight movements. hope your's isn't too serious and heals soon.

"...felt like a rubber band breaking..." that's a good way to describe it. Its really just a little tender and still has that burning sensation down deep. Hopefully this is just a pull, but the noise was so weird.

I will be taking it easy for awhile. I hate not to do legs, but I really don't want to be laid up for a long time. Good news is I have weirdly big legs for my body....so I don't have to worry about working out upper body only for awhile and being that guy .

One drunken night in college on the way home from the bar me and my room mate got into a wrestling match. I went in for a double leg in preparation for a killer power bomb or something of the sort and my right hamstring snapped. Sounded like a pop and felt like a rubber band snapping. I layed face first in the mud for a little while and then somehow got inside and passed out. The next morning I woke up having no memory of the previous night and took one step out of bed and fell over. After a few days the pain didn't go away and the backside of my leg was black and blue for a solid 4 X 6 inch square. I went to urgent care and was misdiagnosed as a muscle strain. I hobbled around campus for a while and now my right leg is about an inch smaller than my left. I completely tore my Semimembranosus and it basically died off since it wasn't surgically repaired. I now have a noticeable to the touch canyon running along the backside of my leg and significant decrease in leg strength.

Take home message... Go to a good doctor that knows what they are doing and get it fixed before it's too late. I had a feeling the urgent care girl had the wrong diagnosis, but I was a poor college kid and chose to just suck it up instead of paying to go see another doctor. 5 years later and I still have daily pain in my hammy. Hope it is nothing serious Keet.

Thanks OSU.....I might go in, haven't made up my mind yet. The pain has gotten any worse....just there. It seems that the pain you were experiencing and what I am is a little different. I almost feel like I could run....then I tried it a little bit ago and not so much....my leg felt "heavy", but not necessarily more pain.

I don't really want to go to urgent care though....that's the problem. I have a doctor that I believe will look at it, but I'm not sure if I want to wait...or how fast he can even get me in. Then...because I've dealt with him before....he's not going to want me to work until I get an MRI....which is going to take some more time.

So yea, I'm going to sit and do nothing eating up even more time while I figure out whether or not this injury is significant (sarcasm alert...I realize I might be being stupid)!

Sounds similar to the couple of hamstring pulls I had when doing really heavy leg curls. I even had some bruising from the blood depositing from the inside. I have heaed the pop you describe as well, but I think that is more of a tendon sliding over some muscle or something similar when the muscle spasms and has a slight tear. Sprains are essentially small tears. From what I can tell so far, I think you have a hamstring sprain/pull. Hopefully it won;t nag for 6-9 months like I had one time... so far it does not seem like any major muscle tear or evulsion. My guess is you have a simply 'hammy' that is going to need some rest unfortunately. It may take a while to fully heal.

I am leaning towards not torn also. I remember every single step I would take felt like I was getting stabbed with a hot knife. It was unbearable and I skipped class for a few weeks because of it. if you feel like you could go for a run then it shouldn't be too serious. Rest and baby it until it is ready for abuse again.

    Thanks guys, appreciate your thoughts.

As it worked out, I went ahead and called the Doctor. He's a specialist and was able to get me in Thursday morning...so I just went ahead and made the appointment. If I feel better then, I'll cancel...if it gets worse, I'll have the appointment available for me. I know he isn't going to diagnose it without an MRI and maybe he won't think that's necessary...but he knows the possible consequences if I ignore it, so I want to run the situation by him. He had me running on my torn cartilage 3 weeks post-op and I'm squatting on that knee 10 years later, so I trust him.

I'm not one to go to the doctor for every thing, but I'm going to feel better if I at least talk to him, especially considering my job.

The ones used on the Bodymaster equipment aren't wide enough, but they are made by Efson, so I'm going to see if Efson makes some wider ones.

Smart decision. You'd be done if you couldn't hop into a truck or climb a ladder.
