Thanx Leigh. Just keepin' it simple for a while. Really trying to eat more (wisely). Been lean so long, it a slow slog. Sounds funny to think of it. Back in my 30's,40's and 50's I could carry 185/190 - no problem.

It must have taken a big psychological reset to go from 190 to carrying 25lbs less. I can't seem to regain 10lbs mass that I've lost over the last 3 years and it's playing with my mind. Regardless of being lighter Larry you are still carrying good quality mass while lean and looking great and your lifts are looking really good. You must have been a beast at 190 ... any pics from then? Do you have a target for this bulk? (timeline and weight gain)

I have been lighter/leaner before in the late 80's early 90's (155/160) when I competed in the old ANBC. Went through a few bulking/cutting cycles then, just couldn't seem to hold the mass for the stage. Then, basically trained for maintenance for 15 years. In 2008, the year before retiring, got serious again.
2008 - 190# bulked
1989 - 153# ANBC Pittsburg 1989
2011 - 153# one wk b4 last comp
2013 - Aug 163#
So, you see my dilemma. I can add mass(or used to), just have a hard time keeping it when getting stage ready. Believe me, if I could figure it out, I would be bulking my ass off.
Where am I going from here? Don't really know. Just keep training and trying things I suppose.

You would think so at my age. I guess I'm a slave to my competitive spirit.
In my teens and 20's I did Oly and PL. Thinking about putting them on the
bucket list. How crazy is that?
Once truly smitten by the iron - turning back is not an option.
Do you feel good @ 166?

You looked great in all of those pics Larry .. you carried plenty of mass at 190 and your arms were massive. Were you a lot stronger at that weight?
It's also fascinating to think that you competed at the same weight and with the same physique/condition in 1989 as in 2011
Still looking big and lean in that pic this year at 163. I can understand how BB and the need to cut hard would sap the enthusiasm, but Powerlifting and competing as a 'master' now that sounds like fun"Better to wear out than rust out!"

Rough guess, down about 20% from 50-60 yo and maybe 30% from 40's. Hoping to slow the rate of decline here lately.

Brought this up to quote Larry.
This ^^^^^ right here is pure raw dedication and love of the iron.
Larry, all your life you have looked like a million dollars. You still do and at 66 years young the body you hike around with you puts men 20-30-40 years your junior to complete and utter shame.
I am surprised you ever wear trousers or a top when going out with that physique man.
As for you feeling weak like a little girl. Nope, not having any of it big guy. You been down the road, wore the Tshirt and are still plugging away like a Boss.
I got respect coming out of my ears for this kind of chit. srs..Ride it like you just stole it.

This is awesome. I love your dedication and hope I can be healthy enough at your age to continue to do what I do. I can relate to your dilemma on adding size and keeping it when you return to getting lean. I think for myself it's already pretty much impossible at the age of 41 to bulk a sh!t ton and then actually keep any LBM when I cut back down. I just don't have the genetics to be BIG & LEAN, but I will still give it my all to add 1 or 2 lbs. LBM a year if that's even possible anymore.

I think you've asked the million dollar question, here. And I also think you've answered it with the appropriate response. With all of the things I am trying (doing) to prepare for the 2014 contest season, I have a real fear that I will step on stage at pretty much the same size as I did last year...

Sorry for the late replies gentlemen. Some unforseen
business popped up I had to take of kept me out of
the gym and away from the net for a couple days.
Appreciate your kind words Leigh.
It would be easy to crank it down and live peacefully
with "back in the day" memories of big lifts, big
arms and a bullet proof body, free aches and pains.
Why continue? I'm not really sure other than the
need to see what I can do, with what I have (left).
I suppose the real answer is - I'm addicted.
Sometimes I wish I was a newb with an exciting trans-
formation in my future and sometimes I try to fool myself
into believing just that. Even so it has been fun.
Nowadays, a PR form me is (Post Retirement).
And that's OK. I get most of my motivation these days
watching young/er fellas like yourself climb the iron
mountain. Also, there is hardly a day that goes by that
I don't learn something new in this game.
Sorry to get windy here. Thanks again.
Thanks Gary.
I think you have set the stage for years of accomplish-
ments in the iron game. Your diet and strength gains
(awesome dead lift) are to be envied and given you a
very lean muscular physique.
Hopefully your attempts to add LBM will yield fruit,
but even though you may think you have reached your limit,
don't let up - your physique will mature and become
more refined. Not such a bad thing on top of what
you have now. One more piece in the puzzle.

Worked on keeping elbows in on my bench reps.
Used a pause on all reps. Felt good.
Next few weeks will be a goofy schedule for
me - Mon, Tues and Thurs. Travelling and
medical issues need to be taken care of.
Opening up my diet has added a few pounds.
Feels good strengthwise.

It's so easy to identify with every thing that you said, Larry. Especially the part about being addicted plus wishing that there was an exciting transformation ahead. Likelihood of that happening in my case is pretty close to zilch. Also share the same nightmare that you and Steve have knowing that bulking for next few months is probably going to result in my looking even worse in 2014.
Inactivity Kills!!!
My journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=140991491 Age is NOT an acceptable excuse.

You're still steadily adding weight so the 'bulk' looks like it's going well ... maybe you've broken through that barrier. Would you think about keeping this bulk going to, say 175 over your winter and seeing what happens? Lifts are going well: squats and bench are looking excellent. I reckon if you stick with the BO rows then you'll see that lower back strengthen soon enough ... still very strong with the chest supported rows though.

Strongly considering the 170++ idea just to see where it goes. The one thing I've noticed the most is I'm not dinging myself up as much after adding few extra pounds. Don't know of any scientific reason for that or whether it's head trick.
BOR's have been a bugaboo for me forever, IDK, mental block probably.
Thanx Leigh. I'll heading off for my nap here shortly

I always feel that my knees are better (as in less painful) when I'm carrying more weight, although I always feel much less CV fit.
The Broscience is that the extra fat cushions the joints. The extra fat in muscles, tendons and bursae probably does help to cushion some exercises. The other thing is that a certain level of adipose tissue is required for the creation of Oestrogen band the maintenance of normal hormonal levels
If you decide to go to 170+++ then I'll be keen to see whet changes you notice
