While John Grimek was termed “The Monarch of Muscledom”, Clarence “Clancy” Ross was known as “The King of Bodybuilders”.
This accolade was awarded not so much for actual titles won, but more for how his presence and aura lifted the sport. Ross’ name became legendary because of his proportionately blended muscularity, his graceful posing style and the aesthetics that earned him major magazine exposure.
Not that he didn’t scale the loftiest heights. Ross won the 1945 AAU Mr. America title, the 1946 Pro Mr. America, the 1948 Pro Mr. USA with its $1,000 payday (and in the process relegating a certain Steve Reeves to second place), and the 1949 IFBB North American Championships.
Ross also won the tall class at the 1955 NABBA Pro Mr. Universe in London. He competed for the last time in 1956, finishing second to Bill Pearl in the Pro Mr. USA. Ross played an important role during a very critical stage of the sport’s expansion, and his infusion of class and personality did much to spread the bodybuilding word to the masses.

As he prepares to enter his 10th consecutive Mr. Olympia at age 36, Kevin Levrone is a picture of calm confidence. Levrone, a 3-time Olympia runner up, is aware of how daunting the task is of unseating reigning Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman. Said Kevin, "When I first saw Ronnie's condition at the 1998 Olympia, I said 'Whoa, this guy can win this show for the next five years -- no one can beat this guy.' But when he showed up overweight last year, I didn't think it was fair to say that I couldn't beat him at my best."
With Flex Wheeler having retired, Kevin's primary competition this year will come from Shawn Ray and Chris Cormier. And what about up and comers like Jason Cutler and King Kamali? "I know those guys saw me at the Bodyrock [July 14] at 230 lbs and had to be thinking they can beat me." He chuckles. Unlike most professional bodybuilders who balloon in weight in the off-season, Kevin steers clear of the gym and keeps his calorie intake reasonable in the off-season, resulting in the lower bodyweight. But with his knowledge gleaned from ten consecutive top-5 placings, Kevin is keenly aware of how his body responds to intense training and meticulous dieting. Instead of risking his health by adding pounds of unwanted bodyfat to his frame in the off-season, Kevin stays light on his feet by performing with his rock band Fulblown in concerts across the country. Dedicating his time after the 2000 Olympia to his band paid off with big dividends. After meetings with Lava and Atlantic Records, and with several other labels vying to release the band's debut CD, Fulblown signed with AM/FM Records in August. So with all of the success in music, why continue to compete? "I do this because I love bodybuilding. I love competing. And I love the fans." Kevin Levrone -- Bodybuilder Extraordinaire.

Weight (contest): 227
Nationality: Canadian
I was born in Montreal, Canada. I grew up spending my time participating in many sports such as: hockey, baseball, judo, karate and skiing.
When I was 20 years old, I got interested in body building. I started training with a friend who had been training for a few years.
He challenged me. He said I wouldn't be able to last a week with him. I took that challenge and turned it into a career for myself. I loved training from the very first workout.
After 3 or 4 years of training I entered my first competition for the title of Mr. Montreal and took 2nd place. That experience was so exciting that I promised myself I would WIN the next show. I did just that ... I became Mr. Montreal the following year. Then, I went on to win Mr. Quebec and the Eastern Canada overall competition. I won Mr. Canada in 1992 and again in 1994 where I took my Pro Card.

Ovrille Burke
I was born in Jamaica, West Indies, and was the second child in a family of four children. I was a scrawny child, but what I lacked in bulk I made up in speed. I could out climb anyone on the coconut tree, and this really helped whenever I got in trouble and had to make a fast get away. I started my athletic career in track and field, where I was able to compete at the national level.
I became interested in bodybuilding the first time I saw Weider advertisement of bodybuilders in comic strips and started training at a local gym. As my body increased in mass and definition, my love for the sport deepened and it soon became my only sport. I achieved some recognition on the island, and became a personal trainer for contestants of the Miss Jamaica pageant and employees of the American Embassy.
My family immigrated to New York in the 1980’s. I immediately located a gym and resumed my workouts and shortly after found a home at the famous 5th Avenue Gym in Brooklyn where the owner, Charlie Corolla, became a surrogate father to me. It was at this time that I realized that I had a special gift in a sport that I truly enjoyed. I trained harder, entered more competitions and won numerous titles. My sister would often complain that she had to wade through neck-high trophies before she could locate the family room couch.
I was ready to move on to the national level when tragedy struck and devastated the family. My beloved mother, who represented all the love and kindness in the world, died suddenly, leaving a tremendous void in my life. I decided to take some time off, and did not train or compete for almost 6 years. I returned to competitive bodybuilding in 1993.
In 1995 I decided to pursue my goal of turning pro in 3 years. I left my job as a member of Donald Trump’s Security team, and went all out training for the 1996 Nationals in Dallas. I feel that the Lord guided me every step of the way and helped me overcome many obstacles to attain my goal. For example, I needed to finalize my American citizenship before I could compete in Dallas. With the Lord’s help, I was able to overcome most obstacles.
However, there was one troubling event that I could not control which was, the date to be sworn in as a citizen. I reached out in faith, and put all my trust in the Lord, that He would continue to guide my path. In faith, I went ahead with my training and dieting, bought my airline ticket and booked my room in Dallas. The Lord prepared a special miracle for me and I became a proud American citizen the day before I left for Dallas. In 1998, exactly 3 years later, I won the super heavyweight class at the Nationals in Atlanta and earned my pro card. Now isn’t the Lord wonderful!
My pro career started in 1999 with the NOC competition where I placed 10th. The following year, I decided to concentrate on building body mass. My next competition was the 2000 Toronto Pro International. I placed 3rd, which qualified me to compete at the Mr. Olympia 2000. One week later, I placed 4th at the NOC competition in New York. I finished off the year by placing 10th at my first Mr. Olympia and one week later at the European Grand Prix in Italy and England I placed 3rd and 6th respectively.
2001 was my third year in the pro ranks. As you may know, I won both The Toronto Pro International on May 13th and the NOC on May 20th. This was another miracle in my life. I know I was not favored to win in Toronto and I was up against stiff competition in New York as well. However; with the encouragement I received from my Pastor, his wife, the congregation and my friends, I actually believed I could do it…and believing was half the battle. It allowed God to step in and make it real.
To make it a complete year, I have just placed 6th in Mr. O, 2001. I couldn't thank God for more except for maybe my family, friends and YOU, MY FANS. This especially after what happened on September 11.
I appreciate all my fans and I thank you for your continued support and encouragement. God bless you and God bless America.

only thing wrong is that Arnolds competition weight is about 25lbs heavier than off-season weight
"High-intensity training is going all-out, not almost all out. It is taking one set to one's absolute limit, not almost to the limit. It is using whatever equipment that is available, not just a machine or group of machines. It is not the words of two or three men, but a commitment to work as hard as possible while in the gym without socializing, resting excessively between sets, or falling prey to the 'this isn't going to work so I'll copy the star' attitude". - Dr Ken Leistner

Bump on this.
Inspiring stuff, and a good collection of information and pictures. Good job, PainFull.
It's true about Arnie. He used to put on a lot of mass for competitions, and actually shrink down the rest of the year. He advises competitors in his "Arnold's Bodybuilding For Men" not to 'bulk up' and put on excess fat off-season which "will only have to dieted off for a competition" since "that excess weight is only bodyfat, not working muscle, and does no good whatsoever."
I guess in those days the virtues of bulking first and then cutting weren't as popular, and mass came on slowly. Probably not for Arnold though; I think his genetics did the trick for him and put on a lot of bulk anyway."The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent." - Arnold Schwarzenegger
