also a short barrel 12 ga with a round of rock salt followed by 00 buck shot is the perfect home defense weapon.

You get one warning then its lights out. You dont have to aim worth a crap and the sound of a round being chambered along with the bark on that fuzzy thing is enough to make anyone crap themselves.

Most people who just want a gun for home defense don't go down to the range and practice EOD. So the spread is going to help them hit something instead of spraying wildly. I'm sure most of the people here praising pistols who are range warriors would miss 100% of their shots if they were shooting at 30 ft at a dark, possibly armed shape at 3:30 AM.

Yeah an MP5 with an double mag would be the best thing for self defense. Those things have basically no recoil at all.

The hughes amendment was pretty sad. The amendment failed vote, but from my undetstanding then was inserted into the FOPA and that passed, and Reagan signed it into law so it is law. Supreme court has stayed out of house rules violations, saying its their business.

The biggest hurdle is the second soccer moms see the word machine guns and legal in the same sentence they will go ape sh*t and lose it.

The best reason is really "muh reliability" since the odds of a decent pump malfunctioning are somewhere within 0.001%

Beyond that, "muh versatility" is also legit, considering you can load a pretty wide variety of loads into the same 12 ga: Birdshot, Buckshot, Slugs, Nonlethal, and all the exotic ****.

A shotgun is prime for home defense in a hunker down in a room and point it at the door until it opens scenario. The average Joe isn't trained to sweep a house during an invasion.

Because you don't need a permit to own a shotgun. And a lot easier to use I guess.

Personally like you said it would not be optimal in tight places so it's not my first choice, rather my shield any day over a shotgun. Plus we have guns hidden around the house so no matter what level of the home we are in, there is a weapon we can get to fairly easy

LOL nah we actually love each other very much. We just love our weapons as well and believe in being prepared and well armed I am getting a compound bow next.... I can't wait!

There are many reasons, but in the end, an AR-15 is probably the best option.
1. Long guns are better for aiming than pistols. So that's one plus.
2. Shotguns also have immense stopping power with 9 pellets of 00 buck, that's like 9 different 9mm projectiles headed towards the vitals of an assailant. #1 buck I think has 16 30 caliber projectiles...also very nice.
3. Shotguns can be very cheap
4. Buckshot is less likely to penetrate a wall and hit someone on the other side like a pistol round will.

However, most shotguns will suffer from low magazine volume. The recoil is also quite high. An AR-15 with 30rd magazine is probably better as it brings substantial firepower with little recoil...yet maintains the long gun aiming.

The oral arguments in Heller were pretty telling about the SCOTUS feeling on machine guns. Only a few people owned them was argued. One of the reasons they overturned the DC gun ban was handgun was a popular weapon of home defense. So popularity has a lot to do with what is legal apparently, sad. I'd dig up the oral argument transcript from Heller but its depressing

Why would you want a long arm like that in the CQC environment? Any pistol with a 30rd mag and hollowpoints would be more ideal than a shotgun.

because shotguns are the best, easiest, cheapest, and most powerful firearm for home defense.

Unless OP has gorilla arms, a pistol held in proper shooting postion will be almost the length of a short shotgun.

1. the sound of a shotgun cycling has made more than one intruder leave the premises. This alone is why they are endorsed so well for home protection.
2. it's dark, adrenaline pumping - not the time to rely on pinpoint accuracy
3. someone mentioned above, the shotgun is the perfect weapon to point at an entrance way or down a stairwell

The only advantage a handgun has in home defense is that it allows you to call the police with the other hand.
