I wouldn't start unless I had at least $2k You'll have to hunt for a broker with cheap fees and use free services for stock info/selection but that's not a big issue. Look into trade king and Interactive brokers to see who has an account that fits your low liquidity needs for cheap fees.

I think she'll tone down the considerable time concept and focus more that the Fed is committed to eventually and slowly raise rates as the economy recovers and that they will monitor multiple indicators in addition to unemployment rate and inflation to follow the Fed mandate of high employment modest inflation.
Basically she'll be saying "we're going to raise rates slightly faster than expected but maybe over a longer period of time".*True Detective Crew*

They need to announce that QE is over before mentioning anything about rate hikes. Give the bond market 3mths or so to settle to a new level without forced buying and then pump the rates for 25bp and see if there's any fallout. Yellen doesn't seem to like the level the market is at and it wouldn't surprise me if she starts to take it down a notch. I think most of 2014 is above and beyond where it should be but we all have our views and reasons.

Why stop now? QE 4EVER!!!!
But seriously, every single bank in the world is scared sh*tless of raising rates, even by a percentage point, hell even hinting at it. I really wonder what the long term ramifications of all this is going to be. Since every currency is getting devalued and nothing like this has ever been done before, it will be interesting to see what happens."We're going to play hide and go seek. I'm going to go hide, not tell anyone, and if they can't find me, they're going to hell." - God

No idea neither. But I really see no reason why we can't trust the people running the CBs who failed to see the last great financial crisis coming.
We may have stumbled upon a new evolutionary stage where we are now mightier than Allah, Zeus, Jesus, Odin and Buddha. We can now just print money to spend into prosperity. Don't even need ink and paper anymore. It is all just electrons.
I don't know why Yellen wouldn't just says "About those excess reserves? We are not only going to stop paying interest on those, we are going to fuking charge you interest." Boom, unleashing $2700 BILLIONS. They are already implementing negative interest rates in EU. Why not us too?Last edited by Tekkendo; 09-17-2014 at 10:36 AM.

That's the best way to get the banks to lend out reserves. The only problem is that rates are at all time lows at it is. They will practically have to give that money away to get it on the streets or spent in infrastructure products.
IMHO the FED has to take some of the money out of the reserves and give it to corporate farming at ZIRP rates. Like any good corporation, the country needs to reinvent itself and being the #1 weapons supplier is NOT the answer. Put the money into the food chain and create more mega farming that can supply more of the world with food. It would bring the costs of food down in the US, it provides jobs that can't all be replaced by machines, the US doesn't have to try and compete with China for low cost manufacturing (in some cases the US could actually be better). It doesn't mean the US slows down with technology advances but I think food production and farming should be exploited. There will be whining from other corps but who cares. They gave hand outs to the auto industry and banking in 2009. It's time to shift focus and change what the country is the best at.
I really want to toss in medical advancement but there's to much money wasted here for big handouts. Risk:reward is just too high.My $0.02 is worth $0.03

Do most of you have diverse portfolios, or do you guys just target specific sector? I have some in the tech industry, and also branched out a few months ago into the solar industry, specifically a Chinese solar company. We'll see how it goes, but so far so good with TSL. With China offering incentives and trying to get some big businesses and communities to go the solar route, I have high hopes for the company.
It could be a mistake, but I purchased some Blackberry stock about a week ago. Their phone days may be coming to and end, but Chen looks like he has the company going in the right direction.
