You work them in the order they appear in the equation.

yeah the parenthesis in pemdas takes priority in the sense that no matter what you do, whatever in the parenthesis has to be performed first. under no circumstances does the 9+3 NOT get added together.

so yeah you 2's were right up until that point, but then you neglected the rest of the orders of ops. you went right to left for whatever reason

this is why your grade school teachers urged you to completely right out every step of the problem. IMO at least

I missed it at first because I haven't worked a problem this trivial in a while, seeing (9+3) written was just weird. I treated 2(12) as another parenthesis step at first before I actually thought about it and realized I was being retarded.
