What advice would you have for someone who wants to get into acting?

Practical advice or "life advice"?

Everyone will tell you, "go to LA"; unfortunately, that's where every aspiring actor goes, gets completely lost in the crowd (since there's nothing to distinguish them from the million other aspiring actors trying to do the same), and then they move back to wherever they came from two years later with a lot more experience waiting tables and, maybe, one or two brief appearances as an extra in a crowd scene.

Act. Go to auditions and if you don't get the part, it's good practice. Contact the local film schools and get in some student films. You won't get paid, but you can ask them for copies of your footage and start building a reel. Get a decent headshot and think of what skills you have to put on the back that will make people want to hire you. (Snowboarding, hockey, horseback riding, rock climbing, etc.) Volunteer as a PA.

And if you're ever in a horror movie, bring extra underwear. Wardrobe will typically have three to ten duplicates of your outfit (shirt, jeans, whatever), but they won't supply you with underwear. After six takes of getting covered in fake blood, you'll feel like the world's most disgusting candy apple under your pants--and it'll take way too long under a hit shower (which there may not be at the location) to get them off.

Thanks..... I look up to actors like Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, and the list goes on. But if I could have a career I'd want it to be like one of those guys, doing both independent pictures and commercial stuff, and working often.
