I was introduced to the Circle of 5ths today. How do I not over complicate it and apply it to my playing?

I like the look of wood grain as well with everything, it's like a work of art when you have a good grain pattern.
I use my acoustics 99.9% of the time, though I own 3 electric guitars I haven't touched in years. (that number was once 12)
Guess I get my wood grain fix with the acoustics.[]---[] Equipment Crew #78 []---[]

Also to follow up my previous post, with the idea of wood grain in mind;
I'm planning on buying an unfinished strat body so I can do a carving and build a guitar based on the design.
Finding that the hardest part is coming up with a layout and theme.
Some examples:

Anyone have any experience with this type of tapping.. Just can't do it at that speed, learned the whole song but stuck on that little arpeggio lol.. Could my fingers not be long enough?
(at 1:22)
Here he explains it but it doesn't help much

I have small ass hands and I can do it to some extent. I'd suggest tackling smaller arpeggios (eg, take out the 7 and only do three notes per string) and take it from there.

Any jazz guitarists in here? I don't know how to sight read, I can read notation, but I don't know where the notes are on my guitar (aside from open/barre chords since it's just the root) Is it necessary to know how to sight read or know all the notes on my guitar to be proficient in jazz?
I've been playing for 8 years now and have recently been wanting to start learning scales for jazz, I know plenty of jazz chords but I don't want to get ahead of myself with scales in case I should earn the notation on my guitar first. I actually want to approach this mammoth of a genre correctly. Jazz seems to be a sporadic style with no definitive pattern, or rather I haven't picked up on the pattern yet.Chloë Grace Moretz Appreciation Crew - Chairman

Chon is phucking good. I've seen them live twice now. Ridiculous talent. Their music gets sort of stale though. I also wish they wouldn't do those songs with the chitty vocals. Just instrumental pls.
Not a jazz guy at all but I'd say Jazz is one of the few genres in guitar where being able to sight read and know the notes is a good idea. If you don't know all the notes on your guitar or scales yet, tackling something like jazz may be a bit tough.Signature keeps disappearing crew

Ordered a $3k 1959 strat reissue 3 tone sunburst (I like the vintage ones but don't have the cash to buy an actual pre CBS strat). Pricey but I'm pretty excited for it. Guitar store had to order it in so will get at the end of the week. Feels like Christmas as a 10 year old again.

Lots of patterning in jazz. Chromatic sequences are very very common in jazz guitar. Check out Grant Green, he was a very pentatonic jazz player... his licks are definitely some you should know. Learn how to read charts, memorize the fretboard and learn your 7ths in all inversions. Jazz is extremely difficult, so expect to keep learning for the next few decades.

I'm loving this thread, my preferred genre is Metal. I'm taking though as I find it's best this way I know what to work on and get feedback on the practice I'm doing.
My teacher having me learn to sight-read and mess around with scales and basic chords using the circle of fifths. Since touching my first guitar at 10 years old, I regret not taking it seriously when I was younger. Basically I have to start from the very beginning. No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. Ah, well either way. I do like Fender but I couldn't justify paying that much for one when they're all essentially the same damn thing. inb4
To each his own though brah. I'm sure you'd say the same about some of my guitars, although I've never paid more than $1k for any of them.Last edited by ShoryuBrah; 08-08-2015 at 10:43 PM.

Can anyone tell me what key this song is in?https://youtu.be/P4hn86XjxYA
It's mainly a piano pop song.
I'm trying to learn the piano notes, if I find the key it will be much easier. I need to try to find out with my instrument in front of me but won't have access for a while.I used to have an AVI of my traps and neck. I changed it a while back and tried editing my user title but this website is glitched and it will not let me change it anymore.

Just wanted to reiterate that learning a new song is a relatively joyful thing to do.

I love learning a new song can spend hours with certain songs.
I still don't understand how you guys can still enjoy that song after trying to master it. Maybe it's because I mainly play classical but after so many hours of rehearsing a particular song over and over, it doesn't even sound the same to me.
Also my friend let me borrow his bass. Is it normal for the strings to tear your skin off? Can't slide on this thing at all. So rough. It's an extremely cheap bass thoughI used to have an AVI of my traps and neck.
