instead of PM we like to put the info out for all to see :
DC is the Damage Controlmen rating. In easy terms they maintain the ship's fire fighting and damage control equipment. While all personel onboard ship have some fire fighting training - some more than others- the DC men have advanced training and normally lead the fire fighting / damage conrol teams. They also train the new crew members and provide contiual training to the crew. Advancement is good - civilian job prospects converts easily to civilian fire fighter.MILITARY RETIRED

For those of you that have been to the San Diego area I'm looking for decent areas to live with a reasonable 30 min drive at most from Coronado. I have two pets so I would be limited to Murphy canyon for base housing and this is causing me to venture out in town and look elsewhere.. I found some nice places in east lake chula vista and spring valley (ranchero?).. I haven't heard much about spring valley but I know the place I found is awesome..
What do you guys think?Georgia Bulldogs/Orlando Magic/Miami Dolphins/UCF Knights/BoSox

Love this thread, guys. I'm 24, scored an 82 on my Asvab & going to MEP's in a couple of weeks. What should I know about heading into bootcamp, any tips? Also, what are living conditions like? Am I guaranteed to be on a boat on 1st deployment or do people actually get military housing and whatnot? Curious.

Are there any surface warfare officers on bb.com?
Any Annapolis Graduates?"I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."

Boot camp - Be in decent shape, and do what you're told
"Living conditions" in boot camp are open bay barracks and open showers. But everything moves too fast for you to notice or care.
Aboard ship, conditions are tight. I'm pretty sure everyone on a surface ship has their own rack (bunk), but new guys on submarines will be "hot-racking" (alternating use of the same rack - once again, you don't really have time to care, since sleep is rare and welcome when you get it).
When in home port, you'll have a barracks room (think college dorm), until you're senior enough to move off base (rank depends on the base and their housing status)... or until you're dumb enough to marry young just for the chance to move off base.
You'll likely be assigned to a ship for your first tour - but that really depends on your rating (job), and where they need to assign guys when your school class is up for orders. You theoretically have the chance to submit your preferences... but the primary determination of your assignment is where they need to place bodies that week.

i see the faces of every single piece of scum thats done me wrong over the years, and I hate them for it, but it did me good every single day to get up and train harder and be stronger so that one day if our paths cross again, I'll be the one with the chin held high.

It had been exactlly one month since I heard anything from my recruiter. Last time I was in the recruiting office I signed off on a background check, I was told I had to submit an essay why I didn't graduate. I did just that about a week later and never heard from anyone again. I go down there today to see what was going on. I get piss tested, my paperwork was scanned and sent in, gave me some new papers to fill out and I was told I was going to MEPS on the 1st. I tried to contact them on multiple accounts and nobody ever contacted me back, nobody ever told me if my essay was acceptable or not, but now I go to MEPS in two weeks. I'm grateful things are finally rolling but does anyone know why I was left in the dark for a month? I mean.. a background check doesn't take a month, right?

a background check takes over 6 months.
they prob have so many people trying to enlist that they are just waiting for slots at meps to open

Honest response:
A. That was wildly stupid
B. It damn well better be "never" again. Navy policy is simple: Pop positive on a (random) test, and you're unemployed (with no post-enlistment benefits). Pop during DEP/MEPS/Boot-camp check-in, and you're out before you're ever in.

what they were waiting on is basically a non-grad waiver. Years ago when I was recruiting they started screening non-grads- they had a police check done (not back ground check that is different and will be done at a later time if needed), medical pre-screen form, asvab had to be over 50 or don;t bother, current work status and work history, list of any civic activities or volunteer orgs, an essay, and sometimes a meeting with the NRD CO. The waiver was at the NRD CO level at that time and could take 3-4 weeks. If waiver authority is above NRD CO now then it could take longer.... Hope that clear some up for you
