Serious FRep....the 60s weren't unifying at all. Of the 1900s I would argue it was one of the most largely turmoil decades. JFK was assassinated, MLK was assassinated, the hippie movement, the black panthers, the heavy racism in the south, the rioting in so many major cities, the most controversial war in US history...I mean I just never think of that specific decade as one of unity.

Do you understand that all of those things you mentioned were catalysts for change and unity? That the 60s were some of the most transformative years in the 1900s?

I'm not sure how someone can definitively speak on the "mood" of the nation during a period in which they weren't even alive.

Nobody is claiming to be definitive. Last night all I said was there were some interesting facts and parallels.

At best, you could parrot the information written about the period from someone who was, but that wouldn't make you enough of an authority on the subject to argue with anyone about it.

Actually, it would do, if this was a debate and we were citing sources. That's why we have historians and we continue to learn about things that happened a long time ago...when none of us were alive.

True, I suppose I still compare it to 2001. Definitely at 9/11 there was a huge rush of "American-ness" but then look what happened 5-10 years later?

Once again we were a nation divided. The War in Iraq was growing much more polarized. The PATRIOT Act, DHS, TSA, etc, were becoming the subject of national conversation and people were starting to think it was way overboard and that we'd lost too much personal freedom, etc.

Seems you've generally missed my point about the war and how it eventually did lead to unification. And maybe you haven't considered that the "America-ness" that 9/11 generated drew momentum from the fact that the media and the internet meant everyone was much more connected in 2001 than they were in 1968.

Well ... Vietnam -- the two parts -- became unified. I guess you can get some "unification" points for that. As mentioned earlier, 1970 Kent State solidified just how f'ked up everything on this side of the Pacific had become. From then on, more of the general public steered towards an anti-government position, though it wasn't enough to stop Nixon's '72 campaign (and his subsequent abuses of power). Luckily he sorta did in his own self.

What struck me more than anything is that it seemed the government then truly had the best interest of the people in mind when crafting legislation, and had an honest worry about any government getting to the point where it was a power unto itself.
