It's $45 more here in canada. I don't really expect myself to overclock it. that money i could invest into a new GPU (i currently have a 660TI 1gb iirc)
The benchmarks really are not that different between the 4590 / 4670k but i guess that's not overclocked.
I'm a newb when it comes to processors. Upgrading from an old dual core Q series

Your budget for the processor board combo is great. K model intel processors mean the multipler is unlocked for easy overclocking. if you have no desire to overclock, save some money and get a non-K intel cpu. If you ever get the itch to overclock in the future, non-k can still overclock slightly, but not as high as k models obviously.
I never recommend SSDs on poverty builds since that money can be spent on a better cpu or gpu.

That's a good price. I'd use it but just for the OS and programs. Not valuable data.

Finally got some money together to replace my watercooling pump. Had to replace my old D5 last year with a cheap pump for a quick fix.

Hey guys, looking to get back into PC gaming now that I am done with graduate school. I built my own rig in 2011, and I was wondering if you fellas could recommend what parts I need to upgrade on.
GPU: gtx 560 ti sli (1gb each card)
CPU: 2500k
Ram: 1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
MOBO: 1 x GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
spent like 1400 on this rig at the time, don't know if I truly got my moneys worth. I want to be into PC gaming im just apprehensive I may fall into the trap I fell into before, the trap of having more fun building a rig rather than playing games!

Ok so I want to rejoin the MASTER RACE after a long hiatus. My body is ready but I'm a bit out of the loop regarding specs. For the main components so far I'm leaning towards:
- R9 280x
- i5 4670k
My goal is just running most things at max 1080p 60fps+. So my questions are:
- What's the best mobo to support this (priceandfutureproof/10)
- How much and what type of RAM? I think there's like GDDR5 or something now right?

Anyone build a PC recently in the lower/mid-value range (400-600)? Used to really keep up with all the new hardware and what was the best value and **** but I haven't really paid attention at all in 4 years. Don't really play games other than some D3 so don't need a really good video card.
Also, where should I be being my parts? Always used newegg/tigerdirect in the past but considering buying ebay this time around.Last edited by Amaso; 06-16-2014 at 08:19 PM.

Never heard of Microcenter before, just checked and theres one like 30-40 minutes from where I live. I looked at their prices online and they are basically the same as newegg/tigerdirect... and I'd rather just order those online and have the parts show up at my door rather than driving a relatively long time to pick them up (only going to Houston on the weekends right now anyway).
I just looked on ebay and saw lots of really nice rigs that are very cheap for the parts they have in them. Anyone have experience buying used or new parts/pc's from people on ebay?

That's a nice looking PC but probably will be out of my budget... I'd imagine it will be at least 800 by the time it ends. Some of the specs are a little overkill as well for what I want to do.

keeping an eye on this one as well

This used to be my exact same rig a while back but with a different MOBO.
Ideally you can just overclock your processor, sell off the cards, and get a single stronger card with more VRAM. GPUs to consider...
$300-350 range:
- R9 280x
- GTX 770
$400-500 range:
- R9 290
- GTX 780
4670K or 4690K, which ever is cheaper... They're roughly the same performance (the 4690K has a higher stock clock [100Mhz more] & better TIM). 8GB DDR3-1600+ MHz RAM is pretty much the standard that most builders use now a days so what ever you can find within those specs + good pricing, then you're set in that department. As far as the motherboard, I would recommend the Z97 chipset boards since they'll support M.Sata & Sata Express (it will future proof you if you ever wanted to go that route as far as storage).
I've been building lower/mid-value rigs as of lately for my own personal use as well as friends/family. Newegg is usually my one stop shop for online purchases, however a lot of people have been using http://pcpartpicker.com/ It's a site that pretty much finds all deals all over the web for which ever particular part you're looking for.
Now, an example of a rig that I built as of lately (mid-range media/gaming pc):

Of course you could go with an AMD quad-core, however I'm an Intel fanboy

The cpu bundle alone is worth the 30 min drive

Most people would say to go with a Sammy or an Intel SSD. I've lost data a few times before and when it comes to storage I make sure to buy something that's been proven reliable.
Speaking of SSD prices dropping, this is an amazing deal, $410 using promo code EMCYTZG483

they price match newegg and amazon (shipped and sold by amazon only), you can also find open box motherboards that they've taken an extra $10-30 off.
Also a 4770K at MC is $259.99
@ newegg 4770K is $339.99
The CPU alone is an $80 difference and if you buy as a bundle with a motherboard you get $40 off. total savings of $120 minimum (will be $130-150 if you buy openbox motherboard)
Unless you drive an H2, it's worth it.

This... My Microcenter is about a 20 minute drive from where I live and I ALWAYS go there just for CPU/MOBO bundle. It's true, the motherboard prices are the same as if you were to buy off Newegg/TigerD, however the price on the CPU is what you're really saving money on, PLUS the additional $30-40 off on top of that when purchasing the CPU/MOBO together.
Just another comparison for you:
4670K on Newegg ($239.99):
MSI Z97-Gaming 5 1150ATX Intel Motherboard on Newegg ($157.99):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116899
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130770
^ TOTAL = $397.98
4670K at Microcenter ($189.99):
MSI Z97-Gaming 5 1150ATX Intel Motherboard at Microcenter ($119.99):
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...spx?sku=583302
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0433130
^ TOTAL = $335.55
For all other components, you're best purchasing those online.Last edited by toneekay; 06-16-2014 at 10:55 PM.

Pretty sure the chit fans i'm using on my radiators is robbing my OC gains
Anyone have any experience with the Delta 120mm fans that produce 150-200CFM? I know they're loud as fuk full blast but would I be able to hear it with closed headphones?
Are the cheap Corsair 120mm fans that produce 60 cfm be enough for a radiator?
