Nainoa, I think hydrocolloid dressings go against the "leave wound open to air" rule of thought.
"The moist conditions produced under the dressing are intended to promote fibrinolysis, angiogenesis and wound healing, without causing softening and breaking down of tissue. The gel which is formed as a result of the absorption of wound exudate is not mobile and free running but held within the structure of the adhesive matrix."

Just got some new North Face Windstopper gloves for everyday wear. Usually wear Marmot gloves though.
also checked out some headlamps by this company: http://www.ledlenser.com/
I thought my Petzl was good, these were incredible for the money and they seem to get great reviews on amazon. their torches are solid too.
I believe the top of the line model is rechargeable and they all offer a dimmer and an adjustable focus from spot to flood.rumpler of stiltskins

^ good idea
Saw some video about how long canned goods last for, some had "best by" dates 4 years from date of purchase, plus they usually can go another 3-5 years past that (they just lose some flavor)rumpler of stiltskins

I'm looking into a kit to keep in the heavy pack and a lot of them seem to be pretty generic in terms of what they come with.
I'm going to keep reading through the thread for ideas, but what kits did you go with?
Edit- I noticed you mentioned about picking a Maxpedition Fatty,
I'm definitely going to look further into putting a kit together in depth.Last edited by TheDude8734; 11-25-2013 at 12:14 PM.

No dude... Eating in and of itself uses water and the more water it uses the more metabolic energy it takes to digest it. For a relatively low nutrient value food like Ramen, eating it dry has a pretty small net gain nutritionally.
That's why you cook it in the heat of your own piss (Preferably on a sunny day in June), then rinse the piss off... Add spice packet.

LOL...
I'm actually writing a short story collection right now as one of my back burner projects... It's a food and travel piece based on my travels over the years and what I've learned.
Yesterday I was writing about the stint I spent promoting a lake shore real estate company... The home office down in Minneapolis didn't have anyone that wanted to go to Northern Minnesota in winter... They were all afraid they'd be gored and raped by a Moose or something... So they sent me on the road because, "I've gotten myself into situations that would make Bear Grylls drink his own piss."
So I parked my fish house 8 miles out on Lake Mille Lacs and used it as a home base to live on the cheap, Ice road fees are $80 a day less than hotel cost and I cooked all my meals on top of the wood stove... Then drive out to appointments in a suit that probably smelled a little of wood smoke and fish guts, trying to sell ads.
It's funny to think I was cooking Venison Carbonnade on a wood stove, 8 miles out on an ice road, while the other sales monkeys were at some high priced hotel drinking the mini bar and jerking off to pay for play hotel pron!6'4"

Speaking of ramen I came across this thread where a guy tried to live off ramen to see how it would be during a SHTF scenario

If I get to a point where all I have to eat is ONLY Ramen and their are NO OTHER alternatives... I'm just offing myself before the rabbit starvation gets me.
I mean if you can't even trap small game you're already so deep in the hurt locker that there isn't jack **** a month of eating ramen noodles will save!6'4"

Well Mushrooms is a whole other kettle of fish. The only wild mushrooms I 100% trust myself to find and eat are Morel... They are unique looking.
I wouldn't eat a single LEAF unless I knew it didn't have toxic alkaloids.
A lot of toxic alkaloids will interrupt your body's ability to process carbohydrates... You can eat at a Vegas buffet line and without proper medical attention you'll still starve to death in time.
This is most likely what happened to Chris McCandless.6'4"

Yep... And he had an edible plants book in his hand, staring at the picture while eating the wrong plant that ultimately killed him.
That whole "Eating edible plants" thing is not as easy as they make it look on TV... It's not really the sort of thing a book is going to teach you from scratch... You really want some first hand experience.
Like find a boyscout troop master and go for a walk in the woods.6'4"

No... I mean you need to find someone with first hand experience to teach you.
The internet is WAY too full of Information Pollution to trust it as a source. If you look and keep your ears open I'm sure you can find someone who knows.
You might even be able to call one of the related county or university extension offices and they can point you in the right direction of someone.6'4"
