Yeah. It was a Slight **** show because when I called about parts I asked about both a new pulley, and a new alternator. Both had to overnighted. I specifically asked "does the pulley come with with alternator if I get it?" Of course he said yes and of course when I was at the counter I checked and sure enough. No pulley.
Most cases, no big deal. But I'm working on a broken down truck in the driveway of the farm. I have no compressor or impact wrench. HOW AM I GOING TO GET THE PULLEY OFF THE ALTERNATOR? It pissed me off, because I could have brought theold alternator home and taken it off myself with my gun. Instead, I had to take alternator back to Ford and tell THEM to take it off. Since it was their Fukk up and it takes 3 seconds. Then I had to deal with the jackass mechanics attitude to a chick working on cars and it all flooded back why I quit.
Anyway, I got it all back together and she purrs like a happy little kitten now. I'm concerned about how tight I got the nut on the pulley because obviously it attaches to the alternator shaft which spins freely... but again, no impact wrench. Last thing I want is them to be towing 4 horses to Toronto and have the truck fail because of me. (Also reminded me why I never work on friends and families cars)

What's a torque wrench?
I measure based on bolt size. It's directly proportional from a one forehead vein to a full blown hernia scale. Lug nuts are right around a skid mark. Which I'll be wrenching on 20 of them tonight to put my snow tires back on thanks to this new winter storm.Toxic Masculinity

Son..aren't you an engineer? lol
Speaking of skids, my youngest was helping me tighten a wall lug on the pedestal sink in his bathroom and he was like "how tight do I get this?" while he was putting pressure on the wrench. About that time he farted so loud it startled me. I was like "I think you got it."

Torque wrenches are great. If you are working on a stationary nut and know the torque specs...
Apparently the nut im dealing with should be around 95ft/lbs. I didn't get it anywhere near that. Not because I can't, I have a 2.5 foot breaker bar, but the shaft spins with the nut, so I worry I didn't get it tight enough.Last edited by Fawnl; 02-22-2017 at 04:45 PM. I changed the rotors on my Escape a couple years ago. I legit spent about 6 hours trying to crack the bolts on the calipers. Weird thing was there was no rust. It was so tight, couldn't get any leverage, and when I did I was so paranoid I'd pull it off the jack stands and end up with my upper back moulded in the shape of the wheel well.

Vex, I was thinking the same thing. Use a torque wrench on a wheel nut someday. While the wheel is still up in the air. See how much torque you can get on that lil guy.
It's not exactly the same scenario, but the struggle is the same.Last edited by Fawnl; 02-22-2017 at 04:46 PM.

Changed the battery on wifey's car last night. Got called back home yesterday morning as car wouldn't start or even turn on interior lights. Jumped it and wifey was on her way. Checked voltage after getting it started and was showing 13.9 volts. So, alternator working.
It started on it's own a couple of times during the day, but when I got home and checked the battery, 10.3 volts...toast.
Do you guys really go through life without an impact?
A few tools besides the basic hand tools that are irreplaceable. Air compressor + impact, DMM (Digital Multi Meter), and cordless drill. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Never seen this thread before and the OP doesn't have any info. I've deduced maybe titties, toys, and trucks?
Anyways, I browsed a couple pages and saw some alternator talk, so here's what I've got going on soon.
Got a '99 S10 Blazer that sounds turbo charged, really loud squeal that changes with engine RPM's. From my searching it seems like it's an idler pulley going bad.
I have this 2nd 270a alternator to install, so while I'm in there I plan to replace the whole assembly
Should have hopefully around 300a at idle and 500+ at 2000 engine RPM's after I add the new alternator, but really I'm just hoping to fix that damn squeal.Last edited by PositiveCrew; 02-22-2017 at 10:27 PM.

I'm not replacing the alternator, I'm adding a 2nd one for more power And that's happening separate to the idler pulley.
I figured since I would be in there adding the 2nd alt, I would take the time to replace the whole assembly and see if that fixes the problem.
Yep I will be replacing the whole assembly, including the tensioner.
And yeah I'll be running about 6000w (as a start place) for my stereo.+++ Positive Crew +++

Some good gif makers running around here. After working with my dad as a kid I knew I didn't want to turn wrenches for a living. It's one of those things that's more enjoyable for me when I'm not forced to do it every day. On a side note, maybe its just me being a puss, but I'm scared my 5,300 lb Yukon is gonna fall on me any time I'm under it. I take every precaution to prevent that but it still kinda wigs me out being all the way under it.

I actually enjoy wrenching on chit a little (as I take my truck in to get serviced at the dealership in an hour). It's just the time aspect of things. I'd rather go to the gym.
Changing brake pads is the one thing I refuse to let anybody else do. For starters, shops charge a stupid amount of money to do it, and I get a chance to take a look at the most important safety feature of the vehicle. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Motorcycles are fun as hell to work on IMO. They require far less commitment and tools.
