Any brahs can help me?
I want a tattoo. But I want to make sure it's perfect. I hate the style of "a single tattoo here, a single tattoo there," but at the same time, I don't have money or inspiration for full sleeves and work. So I need tattoos that look good individually, but could also be expanded upon later.
I always hear of different "genres" of tattoo: new-school, old-school, oriental, fine-line, etc; but I can't find any definitive (picture) guides to what each style entails/are commmon for/are judged on.
Any help awaring me on different styles of work? Even if it means just one picture example of each "genre"Carbo Diem!
PM me if you have any questions about His noodly appendage.

save for what you really want. no point of not doing the design or piece you like because of funds. If it is 6 months or 3 years down the road, save up and do it right.
If you want a sleeve, you could break it up into two parts and at finish would look like one full design

new school - very bright and bold also known for exaggerated designs pretty much anything goes
old school - very few colors(black and red main colors)and really just straight forward color use no crazy shading or anything gernally associated with old school military tattoos, nautical stars, pin ups etc.
true old school has a "set of rules" to go with it on outlining and color use
Japanese/Oriental - probably most commonly known for wind bars and water backgrounds, common pieces are koi dragons tigers and less commonly birds, samurai, hannya masks, cherry blossoms, lotus, buddhas
True traditional Japanese tattoos are BIG pieces, chest to half sleeve, body suit, half body suit, full back etc...which is why common sleeve designs are japanese and usually heavy background and bright colored on top of the wind bars
those are what I would consider the 3 most popular styles or more so what all tattoos stem from and new school being the newest style...also portrait, black & grey, color can also be considered types. And you can generally combine all styles a new school japanese/old school piece, a old school non traditional piece such as like a crazy alligator man with boxing gloves etc.
there is also bio mechanical and all kinds...check out BMEZINE they have a full tattoo section that has everything imaginable.Last edited by Eskimo; 12-22-2012 at 05:09 PM.
