Are chest dips bad for your sternum?

Title. Was doing them the other day and noticed a slight discomfort in my sternum, nothing over the top, it went away instantly upon finishing the exercise, however I would like to be cautious as I just got out of an elbow fracture, so I don't want any more injuries for awhile.

You should be alright as long as you don't do weighted dips. It's probably more wise to not do them if they cause discomfort, but meh, 'gotta get them gains.

Well if I can't do weighted dips, whats the point? no progression, no fun. I'm not a fan of high high reps. So you're not entirely sure on whether or not they are bad or not?

I used to have some pain on occasion, it was nothing too serious though, and that was only when I first started them. been doing them for a long time since, and the pain is long gone.

That's what I'm thinking, that it will go away. Bench dips have me the same type of pain lower I the sternum and it went away

Everybody I know who does dips for an extended period of time gets injured from them eventually. I, myself, fractured my sternum last summer from doing dips. Dips and guillotine press are two chest exercises I'd completely stay away from.

I'm pretty sure weighted dips do put pressure on your sternum, just like they put a lot of stress on your shoulders. I prefer chain push ups (any other form of resistance is fine).

For about a month, I couldn't do chest presses or shrugs (did 10 sets of cable crossovers/flies for chest, 6 sets of face pulls for traps). After about a month, I went back to normal.

if you have any type of pain during an exercise, try to adjust your form. If adjusting your form doesnt work then ditch the exercise.

If it hurts, chances are you're doing them wrong.
I can strap 143lb to my waist and bust out 3 with a full rom and feel no pain.
But I also can do with unweighted at a bad angle and hurt like hell.

It really has to do with your body's structure combined with your form imo.

Do weighted dips with 90 pounds for reps, never had any problems with pain in the sternum or anywhere really. No clue what that could possibly be.
“You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth than go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers sayin’, you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody!"

This. Felt okay at first, then got injured, out for 3 months. I prefer to stay away now.

If it hurts to do them, don't do them. How phucking simple is that?

I've done dips with 88lbs and no pain whatsoever.

I think I know what you mean OP, did it feel like it was going to 'pop', similar to cracking your joints?
