Also, the Aztec, Incan and Mayan Empires should get some recognition here as well for sure. All were pretty alpha in their own right. It is hard to argue against the Romans though, although they did take a lot from the Greeks. They expanded and made it much more. Now another interesting thing to look at would be the Holy Roman Empire as well, which hasn't been mentioned. They ruled with incredible power up until pretty recently: 1806 and was around for nearly 1000 years. The actual Roman Empire in which people are referencing was in fact only great for a far shorter period than they were 'technically' around for. After 476 all that was left was the Eastern, or Byzantine Empire which, aside from the efforts of Justinian, was essentially in constant regression.
