Just thought I would have a quick look to see how much an Olympic set would cost.

He who lets the world, or his own portion of it, choose his plan of life for him, has no need of any other faculty than the ape-like one of imitation. He who chooses his plan for himself, employs all his faculties. He must use observation to see, reasoning and judgment to foresee, activity to gather materials for decision, discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and self-control to hold to his deliberate decision.

you could try looking at buying second hand bumper plates, however it is a bit risky as they could be complete sh!t, but sometimes you can get 300kg of weight for a fraction of the price.
also try looking at chinese bumper plates, there cheap, although you lose quality but will get the job done - have no idea about shipping to UK.
if your going to get a platform it is probably cheaper to just make one yourself, made one for a school project it is holding up very well.olympic lifter

I'm in agreement with the superficiality of buying nice equipment. You buy it once and it will be good for life (most likely). I have Mavrik bumpers that I've lifted on for 10 yrs and they look practically new. I have a ZKC bar for about the last 8 yrs and again, other than some minor chrome flaking, it spins and looks like a new barbell. Cost me about $2200 for it all, but it's well worth it. I've gone back and forth on the change plates and may end getting the new Pendlay rubber coated plates.
built my own platform and boxes though, so felt like I save a bit there!!Training log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=168969133
