There's an opinion article from 2011, an engineer/executive claiming Fukushima is "as bad or worse than Chernobyl", with the article attributing him also saying he believes its 10 times worse, without a direct quote, a 3rd article that openly states their opinion as it being worse than chernobyl citing the threat of increasing cancer rates... and? Why am I going through articles of information I've already read that isn't directly interacting with the discussion I'm having?

Fukushima is much more serious than we are being led to believe. Fukushima Diary is an excellent source of information. Together with Arnie Gunderson at Fairewinds, they are both trying to keep this issue alive.

Information is starting to leak out that radioactive materials may have melted through the core, through the concrete subarea (sub-basement) and into the soil where there is no containment possible at this point. If true, it could truly be a China Syndrome meltdown in the making.

We are in uncharted territory with a pack of pathological liars at the helm.

In this article Von Hippel is refering the total amount of specific types of radiation that had already released into the air by February 2012. This has nothing to do with the potential amount of radiation leakage that could occure if Fukushima #4's spent fuel pool gets exposed and starts a radiation fire or explodes and starts a chain reaction of detonating the other reactors. The quote you're referring to has nothing to do with this current situation.

Neither of these statements make any sense to me. I concede I am a complete scientific illiterate; but even if the worst case suggestion of it getting up to 85 times worse than Chernobyl - this obviously would be disastrous - it makes little sense that would end civilization (except in Tokyo and surrounding areas) - and it makes zero sense that it would make life on earth barely possible.

Either the diplomat is even way more scientifically illiterate than I am, or someone with specialised knowledge in this area is going to school me ITT.
