My gym is having a bench press competition in one month. The rules are you do your body weight as many times as you can with proper technique. I'm interested in how some of you would train for the competition. Also I will be shooting to get 30 or more reps at 190. I know that won't win but I would like to hear how many reps you could get using your bodyweight.

BW is about 215 right now. Could do that for about 20 reps.
190 for 30 reps would be impressive.I'm not DrewDarden

Is there an official name for this bench concept in English? In Finland it's quite popular and they have their own national championships. It was first called "military bench" but I think they had some federation issues so it has been now couple of years called "powerpress". I don't know about OP's comp but in here you have to keep your feet off the floor.

Just practice doing it once a week. Maybe do it with 205 or 245 also to feel a few more reps and a little bit more weight. I would just work on getting as many reps as you can before the dreaded mid-rep out pause.... because when you have to take that little pause is when the pain settles in and you won't get too many more after that

I wouldn't even bother entering. Even if I get 10reps+ at my bodyweight, it's going to be dominated by somebody tiny. It's not really a fair test of strength or fitness, just a bit of fun that most gym members can have a go at.
No longer powerlifting. Lifting history:
Competition PR - 210kg/167.5kg/235kg (612.5kg total)
All-time gym PR - 222.5kg/182.5kg/250kg
Recent gym 1RM - 210kg/175kg/250kg
(All lifts are raw - wrist/knee wraps and belt)

I won my weight division in a comp like that at 70kgs, managed 23 reps, the guy that won over 90kgs div got 27 reps. if u manage 30 reps is really hard to beat. Good luck

Train by doing body weight 1 time a week. 5 sets. Each set to failure plus one. Goal is 100 reps total, but many more if you can. My current record at 225(10lbs over bodyweight) is 118 reps. Depends on how you feel, you could do a few sets of semi heavy inclune for 8-10 reps. You also must continue to work the rest of your body as all muscles are connected and used with each lift.As i get older I am realizing i have to get while the gettings good. I can put stats and PR's up here all day long. But, the main concepts with my workouts....
1. GO BIG OR GO HOME.
2. FORM IS EVERYTHING
3. BREATHE.

I'll try that. I worked out chest today. 135-10, 190-8, 210-8, 230-8, 250-8. Then did 185 - 25 and 135 for 34. Been hitting the high reps after my normal bench workout. But ill probably try your workout next time.
