    A quick question about ZMA

I did some searching around the forum and couldn't find the answer.

Why is it that one should try to avoid taking ZMA along with calcium?

    Thx in advance.

As with any nighttime zinc and magnesium product calcium is counter productive to its effects. If calcium were included the body would use the vital magnesium found in ZMA for the absorption of the calcium making the product ineffective for its intended purposes. Most athletes are chronically deficient in magnesium in the first place. Serious athletes consume ample calcium containing foods such as green leafy veggies, salmon, tofu, peas, broccoli, beans, nuts, fortified bread, fortified cereals, fortified orange juice and dairy products which include milk, cheese, yogurt and the abundant amount of whey and casein protein consumed. As you can see most serious athletes consume enough calcium. Enough calcium that when combined with the stress of life and vigorous exercise it can be very magnesium depleting.

Supposedly they are bivalent minerals, but so are Zinc and Mg.... so I don't know, really, I miss the logic. I would not personally loose sleep over it if I needed to eat some cottage cheese and then wanted to take some ZMA . IMO of course.

The reason to take ZMA on an empty stomach or at the very least along with food free of calcium is so you'll get the drowsy effect from the magnesium. You'll still absorb and use the zinc monomethonine. If you take ZMA with calcium meal or supplement, magnesium's potential to absorb rapidly and induce sleepiness is far far less. The empty stomach helps speed the absorption nonetheless.

Not to mention that the forms in the ZMA are important in regards to their competition ... This is what Albion Labs (a leader in mineral chelating research and manufacture) has to say about it ...
"It is true that Zinc/Calcium/Magnesium salts will compete for absorption in the intestine. BUT only salts, i.e. Magnesium Oxide, Zinc Citrate etc. When we look at say Zinc Monomethionine for example it compromises 20% Zinc and 80% L-monomethionine. You can now see the science behind chelated minerals and why they are so effective."
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.
