Most bars on the market are similar; your best bet is to scour the ingredients list on any you're considering, and see what they use as the primary source of protein, and whether or not they contain any trans fat. Beware; many use inferior/incomplete protein sources, and are little more than candy bars. Not that there's anything wrong with an occasional candy bar; it's just not a good substitute for a small meal or a good source of high-quality protein.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for (low-carb, low fat, protein type, etc.), but here's one source for recipes:

I like Boomi Bars a lot, the almond protein ones are just almonds, whey, and honey.

I'll do a Detour bar or a Pure Protein bar once in a while. I'm not a big fan as most are just candy bars with whey added. Those two are better than most, without tasting like dirt.

I love the Detour Oatmeal bars, grrrrrrrrrrreat texture to them! I try to avoid eating a lot of bars but sometimes they're very valuable.

I, because I'm on the go alot ( like most I'm sure) use at least one bar per day. I've been using Detour low sugar. My question is really what is the BEST bar nutritionally. I have limited time to make my own, not that I won't give it at try. I'm looking for a bar with 20-30 g of high quality protein, low sugar no trans fats that tastes pretty good. Does this beast exist?

I stopped buying protein bars a few years ago and started making my own. This way i knew what was really in it and i could add things if i wanted more calories or if i was having a chocolate craving i could add a few chocolate chips. But any way here is a video i found of how to make my favorite bars.

The best is natural protein, there are many protein in the organic ways, try to make diet based on high protein containing products. Just my 2 cents.

I like the pure protein bars as well . . . and Kroger had them on sale for 88 cents each this week so I bought a crapload of them.

Protein bars are tough for me because I have dietary restrictions due to kidney stones--supposed to stay away from chocolate, soy, nuts, etc. So I tend to go with the Pure Protein strawberry shortcake bars. Very tasty! Detour bars are awesome, but I can't eat them much anymore--although I recommend them highly. I still sneak one every now and then.

Tried making my own a few times but they just were a hassle and then they would go bad before I ate them all. So I like bars that are wrapped and they can sit around til I want to eat one. Keep a few in my drawer at work and in the gym bag.

I make sure the calorie to protein ratio is 10:1 maximum - for example if it's 20g protein it can be 200 calories maximum. All of the pure protein flavors I've had meet that criteria. If it doesn't meet the criteria I'd rather just have a shake at 6:1 and save a bunch of calories.

Carb Conscious Supreme Protein bars are pretty good for an on-the-run fix until you can get a real meal. 200 cals, 15 g prortein and o trans fat. Sugar alcohol is 14 g so that's a draw back but as I said if it's a quickie you need until you can get something real in your system it will keep you satisfied.

Universal Nutrition makes a few flavors of a low carb option. They're good.

I like Premier Nutritions bars. Sold at Sams Club. 30g protein, and the sugar is minimal. I dont use a lot of bars often, but these work in a pinch.

I like the Premier bars from Sams club too and they are pretty cheap at about $1 each. http://www.premiernutrition.com/prot...nutrition.html

I also really like the Clif Builder bars and although they do have higher sugar they are all natural which is a bonus IMO. http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_builders/

I prefer the Pure Protein as well. I get the smaller 180 - 200 cal bars w/ 20g of protein. I eat anywhere from 2 - 4 a day. In typing that I should probably cut back they aint cheap lol.

Quest Nutrition protein bars are pretty tasty and have a short ingredient list, along with a good nutritional profile (~170cal, 20g protein, 5g non-fiber carbs, no sugar alcohols)

Quest or Supreme Protein. For those of you eating the Pure Protein do yourself a favor and try the Supreme. Taste like candy bars, and blow away the Pure Protein ones.

supreme protein bars do taste like a candy bar but beware...sugar alcohols can dance thru your intestines...
I have tried lots of other kinds..most taste like cardboard.
cliff bars do taste good and are all natural but may not be as high in protein? the oatmeal raisin is good.

Metrex Big100 brownies are just under $2- a bar at Walmart. If one is really looking for nutrition then I think commercially made bars are out in general.

Thank you to everyone who responded. It's clear there is no real standout. I like the 10:1 ratio criteria. So much knowledge here...
"Oh" I get it, this isn't a sport about weight lifting it a sport about dieting...

one more thing, in general, the more dense in calories they are, the better they usually taste! naturally....

I look at it this way: at it's worst, it is still better, say, than downing a Snickers, or Milky Way......
Lift as MUCH as you can, for as MANY reps as you can,
while in complete control of the exercise.
