    Alcohal substitute...

    Anybody here not drink?? If so how do you do it?? All my friends party all the time and have a great time, i enjoy it too but am wanting to lose weight and get in shape, am thinkin of maybe drinkin sugar free redbull or something instead when I go out...any thoughts??

    Grateful recovering alcoholic here.....

    Best substitute --- living your life unafraid. I know how you feel, but trust me, you can have just as much, if not MORE fun, at bars, clubs, and parties without picking up a drink.

    And yes, red bull might give you the *kick* your looking for.

    Sometimes I drink but generally I am the guy at the party with the bottle of water. Not only do I dislike how alcohol has no nutritional value whatsoever, beer rips my stomach up. If I am in the drinking mood, I will stick with something like bacardi and diet coke. More bang for less calories.

    i've been cutting back lately myself, trying to lay off the beer.
    when i go out i usually get a vodka n' redbull or something.

    what is the yerba mate stuff? i think i've heard of that as a tea.

    Don't drink every week on parties. Drink occasionally sometimes and don't go over the top. I only drink on special occasions such as bdays, family go out as a whole to eat at restaraunt etc.

    It's kind of like "tea" but not from a tea plant - it's made with leaves from a South American tree (holly/evergreen family, if I'm not mistaken) that is every bit as good/healthy for you as green tea plus some added benefits (and I don't think it has the flouride that green tea has). It's somewhat of an acquired taste, but most good things in life are, eh ??? My wife thinks I'm "showing off" if I bring my gourd and bombilla someplace, but hey - that seems to be the way to get the "most" out of the yerba.... It makes me feel great and is good for me - how can you go wrong ??

    Getting drunk is just... pointless. Yeah, let's flood my body with a substance that causes me to feel dizzy, slows my metabolism, and is likely to case me to look like an ass/pass out/puke.

    While weightlifting is only beneficial as it makes me stronger.

    I've drank before. I even have a drink named after me, yet I've never been drunk. The most drinks I've ever had was two in one night. I know how to control myself.

    You don't have to hold the higher than thou attitude. People enjoy drinking because it is fun and sociable, not because it has any nutritional advantages. I am not a big proponent of drinking, but in the right situations with the right people it can be very fun. A night of drinking once or twice a month isn't going to kill anyones gains, the worst side effect it will have is constant laughter and good times (unless you used to be a lush, and you end up being 3 man for 2 hours in the middle of the day until you are laid out on your backfriends porch vomiting with chicken fingers coming out of your nose ), nothing you can't sweat out the next day with 45 minutes of cardio.

    I know how to control myself too. Most of us here know how; it's BODYBUILDING.com not losecontroleveryweekend.com. The difference; we choose on occasion to realize that there is more to life then bodybuilding (you know, a social life?) and have a little bit of fun. That's right, having a few drinks is FUN! Partying, laughing and generally acting a little crazy releases endorphins (same hormone that causes the weightlifter's high). If that kind of stress relief isn't beneficial, weightlifting certainly isn't.

    Not trying to piss you off here, but that "holier-then-thou" attitude could use a little adjustment.

    I am in a fraternity and I drink like twice a year if that. I get a lot of **** about it but then just remember that you are doing something great for your body and you are staying in good health while everyone else is downing booze like a bunch of morons. Alcohol is bad for you, I never saw the point in drinking a lot. I think 90% of people do it because they are bored and everyone else is doing it.

    If you have to drink though, a small glass of red wine won't hurt.

    I am being serious when i say it is hard for me to not drink when i go out. I am from the coal region and needless to say most people in the bars around here are hammered. I have tried several times to go out and not drink however you end up having jerkoffs buying you shots and beer just to get you drinking. I have learned to drink diet sprite with a lime in a small glass... looks like gin and tonic and people seem to lay off me abit when i drink that. Also i find the best way to avoid drinking is to go out and socialize with as many people as possible, as soon as you get to the bar/party. When you start having a good time right of the bat you will not be as inclined to drink. Most people i know want to get a good buzz before they start talking with people because it takes the edge off, however i have found that just socializing right off the bat takes the edge off.

    Hahha, thats like a page out of my own book.... My wife says the same thing, but when we go out to our friends house its what I prefer to drink -and its a very social drink. Anyway, the joke was on her, as last time we went to a couple's house, SEVERAL of our friends had went out and bought Mate and were drinking it at the get together. We heated up a lot of water and went to town... Usually, after somebody tries it, they want to get their own... I just dont think anythign compares to the good feeling that Yerba gives you...

    She never says anything about it anymore!

    If you look like an arse, pass out and puke on 2 drinks then you shouldn't even be thinking about drinking, unless you're drinking paint thinner.

    I don't know about anyone here, but Caffeine is hardly a buzz. I personally drink beer for the taste, I rarely get drunk anymore, rather I enjoy a drink. If you need something for a buzz the only other option would be drugs, if not, stick to water or diet coke.

    The passing out part was to coincide with the other posters comment on drinking to get drunk.

    As far as me stating I had two drinks, that is because I limit myself. I've never been drunk and have never felt the effects of alcohol.

    Regarding the caffeine comment, I never get a buzz either. I'm immune to things that give you "buzzes". =)
