Is it really true that ANYONE can play DIII football?

I just find it hard to beleive that any college coach is going to offer, for example, a lineman who runs like a 5.7 forty and weighs 200lbs a sport on his team. Right now I'm at the point of believing D3 is more, not sucking, than it is being good. am i right??

most people that play D3 usually play for some other non football reason lol. But don't get me wrong they all love the game, but if your going to help pay for my school then they might as well play. At the same time, they really don't get really bad kids because by that level you know football at any level is hard work, and if you don't love the game most "bad kids" wont go through that.

Define "play". Depending on the school, anyone can be on a team. In the MIAC, I believe most of the schools don't cut, since there is no limit on roster size. St. John's has a roster of over 200 players pretty consistently. However, the majority of those players will never see the field.

And it's significantly more competitive than you are giving it credit for, depending on the conference. Teams like Mount Union and Whitewater will have at least a couple players get NFL tryouts every year, as will lots of other teams. If you think you can just walk onto a team and dominate cause you were a stud in high school you're going to be in for a rough freshmen year.

    Ah the MIAC

    I played football at Carleton.

Football teams don't want to take on anyone that does not bring value to being part of the squad. That said, I had guys on my team that didn't start in high school that loved the sport and worked hard. That said, most of those guys never saw the field and we had some outstanding athletes as well. All depends on the program though.

D3 schools cannot give athletic scholarships.

OP, no not everyone can play D3 football. Just like not "everyone" can play high school football. It's still football and it still takes a ton of dedication, time, and effort. Now, if you are a high school senior and really want to play football in college then I'm sure you can find a D3 school that will take you if you are a hard worker and love football enough, even if you didn't start in high school.

Depends on the school. My D3 school was very competitive and very athletic players struggled to get PT. I also have a buddy who played a year at a crap D3 program and got PT and he would probably be a below average high school wide receiver. So yeah, at certain schools you can be pretty bad and make the squad.

You have to be a good football player to make it to a Great D3 school such as Mount Union, or Wisconsin-Whitewater.

But there are D3 Schools where virtually anybody can join the team. Most D3 players dont get recruited or offered which is why they play D3, at alot of schools there aren't even try outs you can just join the team. Go look at some bad D3 schools rosters, they might have 100+ players but you will see plenty of 5'9 linemen and 160 pound players.

My cousin went to a school where football and playing football was the cool thing to do, so 200 people were on the football team every year and I'd say only 30 were real D3 college-level players. srs. Anybody could join the team and even though most rarely/never saw the field, plenty of people played.

I played D3, saw some really good athletes that were only hindered by size not talent (hard to get on a D1 team being a 5'7" wide reciever) and also saw some wannabe's.

Its all relative. I played in the ASC where there are some great players.

I agree with JWP, there were a lot of chumps on the team but most of them got weeded out pretty quickly. They didnt cut anyone per se but they made it suck pretty bad if you werent pulling your weight. There was a large spectrum of players but it really depends on the school. I had a buddy that started at a D1 school who said there were people on the team who looked like theyd never been on a football field.

To actually "play" at any level of collegiate football, the person has to be good. To just be on the "team' is a different story. Everyone on d3 teams are not bad and everyone on d1 teams are not good. Here is a RB who played on a d3 team and is in a NFL camp. Most will say he can play at a D1 school but was at a D3 school.

Colleges will take an excellent athlete who is 6'3 220 running a 4.4 with limited
football skills*over a tough, excellent football player who is 5'7 170 and runs a 4.9

Many d3 players are good at football but just too small/not athletic enough to be playing D1.

Many D3 players also were good but didn't know anything about getting recruited/were from unrecruited areas. (Idaho/New Hampshire/Colorado,etc.)

NOT TRUE ONE BIT. I went to UW-Stout and it was tough! They are near a top 25 team in D3 every year and I seen many great high school players never make it there myself included!

I was recruited by the top D3 programs as well as D2 around Minnesota. I did end up picking a D2 college, but I know a couple guys who gave up D2 scholarships to play at St. Johns so that they could PLAY on a championship team. There are some D3 schools with really solid programs, and others, that suck!

Pretty much echoing what everyone else said. There are definitely different levels of D3. Some that are horrible, however top teams will compete and beat D2, NAIA, D1AA, etc teams.
Of course with a division that has over 350 schools, you would expect that.
