Hello
If the idea that surplus calories turn into fat, and that fat is burned (for energy) in a calorie deficit is true - then how come you can't build muscle with calorie deficit (since fat will be burned to use to fuel the muscles)?

not disagreeing with what you've posted here, but i made a thread awhile ago asking the same thing, and emma-leigh did say it's possible for extremely obese individuals (ie. biggest loser contestants) to still build muscle even while eating at a large deficit. however i'm sure that's vastly different than your average-sized person just looking to "cut" heh.
