Okay...I don't know where to put this, but it kind of annoys me....
Why does everyone (especially high school kids running cross country) assume that distance running will make them look like a starving Kenyan in a matter of weeks? Don't they realize that those runners they see are skinny because they DON'T LIFT?
I mean, really...you have to be eating NOTHING to even lose a significant amount of muscle while running.
Agree?
Disagree?
Opinions please.

agree. weights and distance running involves different energy systems, aerobic for distance and primarily anaerobic using ATP-PC for weights if you are lifting heavy. so you can do both without overtrianing. in fact, being in better aerobic shape also increase workload tolerance which in turn means you can tolerate greater stress for weights and when done at correct volumes/intensity, cardio can be served as excellent active recovery, which is superior to sitting on your ass on off days.
btw nice bench, especially for a girl, do train lower body?

yeah cept distance running can antrophy fast twitch fibers which are markedly larger than the slow twitch fibers developed from distance running.
i wached my freind go from 5'6" and 150 at 10% bf drop to around 135 and 9% bf over am xc season, he still lifted but not as frequently, and you can blame 1 or 2 less days a week for lossing all that massRest in Peace Mike Oldenkamp

no...i don't train lower body...personally, i find that hill sprints and other resistance running workouts are a better lower body workout than anything i could get at the gym.
plus, lifting for lower body doesn't really help me with the specific goals i have, which are running-oriented. upper body strength improves running form. and arm turnover drives leg turnover, therefore lifting for upper body is absolutely necessary. lifting for lower body really won't do much for me if i'm already beating the **** outta my legs every day.Last edited by Squirrels; 08-18-2010 at 08:41 AM.

If you're a serious distance runner, you do workouts for both slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers. (ei, sprint and distance workouts). Competitive runners don't (or at least shouldn't) be just running at a steady pace for a long time every day. In order to be fast, workouts for speed and explosiveness are necessary too.
A lot of long sprinters in college (400m, sometimes 800m) do endurance running workouts on a regular basis and don't seem to be at a loss of muscle.
example...this guy runs the 400:

you're right...any extra *unnecessary* weight will hurt your times...mostly, when people have unnecessary weight, it's in the form of fat or muscle that is not conducive to running.
If it's useful muscle (such as upper body muscle, which helps with form and drives leg turnover. or sometimes leg muscle if you run on hilly courses) it will help you, because it "pulls it's own weight" both literally and figuratively.
But if you've ever seen one of those huge-legged 100m sprinters try to run distance...that's what unnecessary muscle looks like. They have these monster legs, which are powerful for sprinting, but also very heavy. Then they wonder why they can't move them after a quarter-mile.<<STATE QUALIFIER 2008...3200m>>

Had to LOL at the stats too. (even though you are a girl) You are really tiny but it is cool you can bench 140.
Now to your post. They all think like that because to a large degree it is true. I have lost more muscle mass since starting football than you can imagine. I could never do a bbing comp and play pro football. It is potentially possible with drugs or really, really good genetics but as a natty... Nope. Running around and growing big muscles are two different things and they are somewhat counter to one another. This is the subject matter of many, many coaches, trainers and other experts. It is not just some myth....

so you are saying that you runs sprints for your distance training? like say 40's or even 100's and 200's? doubt it.
and doing endurance runs on a regualr basis is a lot different than everyday
and again, are you trying to suggest that 400 runners are running miles regularly? i doubt it.
are they doing repeat 800, very possibly
theres a difference
theres no need to argue about this, i watched it happen
my freind had a great time in cross but he was super pissed about his mass loss
its gona happen, no doubt about itRest in Peace Mike Oldenkamp

At the moment, I am training for a 3000m race, and I run 50's and 100's on Thursday and 200's on Tuesday.
My roommate is dating a guy who runs the 400m competitively, and racing 5k's is part of his training in the offseason. Track has a surprising amount of crossover in the higher levels.Last edited by Squirrels; 08-18-2010 at 08:16 PM.
