Oh I know, I just meant for my area. I know other places have bad bad currents, the only time it gets dangerous here from my experience is hurricane season, and I still go surfin then (gotta with the 20+ foot waves sometimes!).

Though Cocoa Beach isn't known for its huge waves, Sebastian is a little further south and has some nice ones.

How good are you at swimming, currently?

I used to swim competitively as well as spend my summers in oahu. In my opinion, swimming in a pool is a lot easier and safer than swimming in the ocean. At the bay, you have variable depth, sharp **** (coral, rocks, shells, etc) on the ground, cold water, strong waves, and slower access to help.

From a technical standpoint, it's a lot harder to practice your form and breathing in the ocean. The pool doesn't have any current, so you know what to expect. It's also a lot more clear, generally.

    On jellyfish--

how easy are they to see? Do you need to be wearing goggles/whatever to be able to see them underwater or do they float on the surface?

Currently? I don't work on form or anything like that, but I know how to do all the diff strokes and know the basics (took alot of lessons when I was a kid) and I'm in really good shape.

I also know that swimming can test you overall unlike any other... so I guess I should be humble when appraising my skills

All the variables make it more intense... and fun, though

    WTF?

If it has an inflatable float and purple tentacles, get far away from it and warn other bathers that a Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish is in the area. Don't approach within 200 feet of a Portuguese Man-of-War. That's how far their tentacles may extend.

Oh guys you have sent shivers down my spine just reading this stuff. I was swimming in the Sea just this past sunday, however this is in England where there are no sharks, no tidal waves and the only things to worry about are a few jelly fish and polution!

I have a huge fear of the Ocean so getting in the water was a big obstacle for me even though I am a strong swimmer. Once in I loved it and wouldn't get out. The water felt great, I swam reasonably far out. Still had a few minor scares when a fish swam past me or something (water is murky so cant see anything), but other than that it was great. However, no way in hell would you catch me swimming anywhere I know there are sharks and other things than could do me damage. The only way I could over come my fear of the sea was by telling myself this is Southend-On-Sea in England, nothing bad in here. As for Florida, I would be hard pushed to go out till the water is knee length. Can you imagine being out swimming and a shark pops its head up?

Before I read this I would run out in the ocean all the time.. now I dont know...

I read also that my county (Volusia) has the highest amount of shark bites... over double the next highest county.

Part of me wants to just go... **** this ****, I'm a G.. nothing can hurt me..

    But the other part...

If you go in you're a braver man than me. Even if there was 1 shark living in the water I wouldn't go in, because if that shark wants to come say hi, he will. But the highest ammount of shark bites than any other county in your state? **** that man. Think about it, even if you dont bump into a shark the first time, or the second time, theres always the third time and fourth time and so on for it to happen.

Stick to the pool man, you're completely in control. But dont listen to me, I'm a huge wimp when it comes to the ocean.

Be glad you don't swim on the Austrailian northern coast because nothing could compare to a Irukandji sting and after effects:

i think swimming in the ocean for fun is a good idea, but training at it everyday might be so-so. ive been to jamacia twice, florida numerous times, alabama gulf coast, texas gulf coast, and california...ive never gotten hurt or anything but ive always seen stuff swimming near the shore. i just dont know if i would want to do it everyday.

Why would you want to swim in the ocean for? Unless if you live near tropical water you'll freeze your balls off. Just goto the local pool and pay the fee you tight ass.

I've been swimming all my life, a pool can't compare to the ocean.. Just be careful and don't go alone.. AS for the jellyfish I've only been stung once in the past 10 years, it hurt like a bitch though, felt like needles were being put into every spot on my body

You'll even find Bull sharks in fresh water rivers (connected to the ocean)
they swim upstream to give birth in the fresh water
    and they're scavengers .. they'll attack/eat anything

Is swimming in the ocean a viable option? Swimming paralell to the coast?

For what its worth, I'm in pretty good cardiovascular condition
