Virtually ANY exercise, whether it's considered "compound" or "isolation," involves more than just ONE muscle group. Yes, even "isolation" movements actually involve more than just the targeted muscle. Example: Lateral raises (isolation) also involve traps and abs (stabilizers). Another example: concentration curls (isolation) also involve shoulders (you can't help but flex certain muscles while others are being targeted, it's just a natural reflex). If you don't believe me, next time you do concentration curls, place your other hand on your curling shoulder, and you'll feel a slight contraction. Sure, the GOAL is to isolate certain muscle groups, but in reality, we're not really doing that. In reality, we're only LIMITING the amount of involvement of other muscle groups.

Isolation exercises are single joint exercises that MINIMIZE (not eliminate) the use of surrounding muscles. Like Lateral raises.
This is opposed to "Compound" exercises which use surrounding muscles to work a "target" muscle. Like Military presses.
For shoulders, you can do Presses with DBs, Front and Behind neck bb press. front, side and rear laterals. 1 arm laterals, lying side laterals, cable laterals in all directions etc etc.

What, may I ask, is the advantage of an "isolation" upright row? ( I assume it's designed to target the medial delts) Surely it just becomes a side raise with a little rotator-cuff damaging internal rotation thrown in for good measure.

Bottom line: If you want to get technical about definitions, then there IS no "isolation" exercise ... AT ALL. Think about it: We can target muscle groups, sure, but are we really using ONLY that ONE muscle group? Probably not. Not even in "isolation" lifts.
Jeez, all these technicalities are giving me a headache. You can overanalyze and pick apart ANYthing if you really spend time on it. It doesn't matter. Just shut up and LIFT, people! LOL
