Report by TIME magazine:

Apparently, "The basic problem is that while it's true that exercise burns calories and that you must burn calories to lose weight, exercise has another effect: it can stimulate hunger"
"In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless," says Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University and a prominent exercise researcher."
False. A proper diet IS the most important variable for most people, but that does not make exercsise useless.
"In 2007 the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association issued new guidelines stating that "to lose weight ... 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary." That's 60 to 90 minutes on most days of the week, a level that not only is unrealistic for those of us trying to keep or find a job but also could easily produce, on the basis of Church's data, ravenous compensatory eating"
Even TIME has jumped on the "I don't have enough time to workout" bandwagon

Wow an hour of exercise? Thats waaaay too much lol. Theres just not enough time in the day. If you work 10 hours a day, sleep 8 hours a day, travel 2 hours a day, it only leaves 4 hours left to watch tv. Excuses people come up these days.

I disagree. They can go to the gym early in the morning before their kids get up. They can go late at night when the kids go to bed. They can go during their lunch break or right after work. One of the gyms that I go to (Bally's) has a day care center who will watch your kids for an hour unless they are infants. Most of the people in my experiences, even the ones with kids, that say they can't go to the gym spend most of their time watching TV.
Even if they can't go to the gym an hour a day, they can get an exercise bike or something for $120-$200 and pedal for an hour. Plus, they can ALWAYS watch their nutrition and lose weight that way.1

Everybody gets hungry, whether they exercise or not. We all choose what we put in our mouths. While it might be true that exercise will stimulate hunger, that doesn't mean you need to visit the nearest McDonalds and pig out. You could satisfy that hunger with good, wholesome food, in a moderate serving.
This is just another stupid article by journalists who prefer soundbites (potential pun there?? ) to science and fact, for the sole purpose of selling magazines.
The reality is that all the exercise in the world won't make any difference if you don't change your diet. Exercise isn't 'useless' for weight loss, but it's not necessarily all that great either if you keep your bad eating habits.***Irish Misc Crew***

Are you kidding me bro?
Any human being can dedicate atleast 45 minutes of physical activity.
I used to go to school 7 - 2 and work 4 - 10 and I would make sure to atleast workout 4 days a week on weekdays, I would go around 2:30 - 3:30.
Most people have nothing better to do on the weekends, I know plenty of people who I like to call the "weekend warriors" who devote there weekends to working out as they work all day and need time to spend with there family and what not.PSN: KILLEMALLDNTFRNT

I wish researchers would stop publishing garbage like this. Granted it has some valid points but the average person isnt going to read through four pages to see what they are. They will see the title and it becomes another excuse to not even try.

Whilst that's true, and family comes first for a lot of people, excuses do come into play with most people.
They'll watch their favourite TV shows, they'll play games, they'll sleep longer etc. when all they should say in the first place is "i can't be bothered". Because it's true. If they were bothered, they'd find time or more importantly, make time.advertising/self-promotion not permitted

Maybe it is because I don't have a family, or that I am determined. I work full time. I am going to school full time. I still find time to exercise at least 1.5 hrs a day. Some days, like yesterday, I exercise 4+ hours (a bike ride to the gym which is 8.5 miles a way takes 45 mins each direction, then weight training, then swimming - training for a triathlon).
My girlfriend is a self-proclaimed sports endurance enthusiast, and many times we exercise together. On Memorial Day we did a 65 mile (6 hours with breaks) bike ride.
Because I just started back to college (Physical Education Athletic Trainer), I re-joined my local gym, so that I have an alternative place to workout when my schedule is packed. It is tiny, but I make the most of it. Yes, I have 2 gym memberships, and I make the best use of both of them.ACE CPT

That's a retarded assumption of idiotic proportions. The argument here is if exercise will make you thin(ner) and with all other things held equal (ie caloric intake), as should be the case when trying to quantify a variable, it will make you thinner or at the very least make you gain fat at a slower rate.
The assumption that article makes is the logical analog of saying: "Driving a more efficient car creates more pollution because people drive further than they did before". The basic premise of statistical analysis is correlation does not imply causation and the fact that an article like that is published in the mass media today goes to show where America as a nation is heading.

If the parent(s) can't seem to find the time to get to they gym, a good idea would be to do this... Yeah, the kids are home from school... Pry them away from the TV and workout/play with them for 30 minutes to an hour (hell, take the family for a walk/jog)... That will not only help solve the parent's problem but help solve the childhood obesity problem! I'm sure there are simple at home programs they can do together at 5 PM when the kids get home.
I can understand a single parent who has to hold down 2 full time jobs, raise a kid, and make unfair alimony payments could have a serious problem finding time to work out since all 24hrs of their day are taken up... But my father did it for years... He showed me how he stayed fit during trying times (like I did after my back injury) and here's the secret... Simple exercises such as isometrics can be done any time, even at work and in constricted areas such as a cubicle. Combine that with a short calisthenics, stretching, or jogging programs (and proper nutrition!) and It's better than nothing.Last edited by Lasharm; 09-09-2009 at 06:35 AM.

^^ this. if your calories/portions/macros/whatever you believe in/ is in control, then there's no problemo. just cut back on the food/drink, & you'll be fine. w/ busy pple, i find that they hardly have time to eat. however, they must...me thinks late @ night when they get home...'cause how else would they've gotten fat? & no. i refuse to believe in starvation mode.
