    So did leg extensions for pretty much the first time ever...

    and it freaking sucks! My knees were hurting after. Is that supposed to happen? Maybe I'm doing it right. I tried using the full rom, and it hurt my knees. Tried doing just the end extension, and didn't feel much work getting done. Is there a way I should be doing these?

    I used them before when I was a pussy about leg day and wouldn't squat. Hated them, nearly dislocated my knee trying them once too

    I want an exercise that hits my quads directly. right now my routine looks like this for legs (just started it yesterday)

    squats/front squats
    leg press
    leg curls/stiff legged deadlift
    leg extensions
    calf raises

    OP, full ROM on leg exts with full ROM is bad for the knees (as fat as scooby's egg experiment on youtube has shown). Just do quarter reps with big, strong contraction. Lots of pro's do it this way.

    Don't do quarter reps. If you focus on the negative(allow 4 seconds on the way down) you will be good to go. Just don't over-extend your quads at the top of the movement. Get a quick, solid squeeze at the top and get ready for the 4 seconds of torture on the way down.

    I'm not talking about sacraficing form for the sake of weight. But from what I've read, the contraction of the leg extension is the most important part.

    You probably sat too far up and had your shins on the pad or something. I haven't done these in a while but I remember how fast they wear you out. You have to have the part right above the ankle on the bottom so you can push up and sit back farther? Try that and see if it helps. If not try messing around with the weight you used.
