and it freaking sucks! My knees were hurting after. Is that supposed to happen? Maybe I'm doing it right. I tried using the full rom, and it hurt my knees. Tried doing just the end extension, and didn't feel much work getting done. Is there a way I should be doing these?

You probably sat too far up and had your shins on the pad or something. I haven't done these in a while but I remember how fast they wear you out. You have to have the part right above the ankle on the bottom so you can push up and sit back farther? Try that and see if it helps. If not try messing around with the weight you used.
