Too vague of a question, and already bound to be a crappy thread like the 'What's your favorite exercise?" "if you had to pick just one move, what would it be?" "Squat vs deadlift, what would win in a fight?"

Squat or deadlift.
If you want to get big, be good at the Squat, Deadlift, pull and bench press, the rest is between you and your dinner plate.
There are 10 types of people: those that understand binary and those that do not.
I was at the Zoo the other day, there was only one animal there: a dog. It was a ****zu.

Good input above. Stick to compound movements. I personally don't do dead lifts because I'm afraid I'll kill myself but it's a great exercise once you have mastered the technique. I would also add other things like barbell bench press, barbell military press, barbell curl, close grip bench press (for triceps). It's generally the compound free weight movements that trigger the most growth.
Hope that helps._________________________________________

The question is vague, but has merit. I take it as meaning what style....high reps (like Arnold) or high intensity (like Mentzer). I think the answer requires serious thought into the goals of athlete. Does the author of define muscle as the illusion of strength or strength itself.
This is first hurdle to encounter. There will be many more.
