Heh, so, I was thinking about football and stuff today, and I really don't know that much. I've never played, and I probably never will for my school, since the season's started and this is my senior year :P Still, I'm interested a bit...
Anyway, what do you all think is the average size for a linebacker, and their weights on the 3 major lifts? JV and varsity, plz.

Linebacker size/strength?
-

I know both of the middle linebackers at my school are benching over 300 and running a sub 4.6 40 yard. They're both D-1 recruits, so they're not the average linebackers. I dunno what they weigh, but they're definitely over 200lbs. Why don't you just look up a football powerhouse in your state on Scout.com and see their stats for yourself?

well i never played jv ball...i played varsity sophomore through senior year. my number were: bench-345, squat 475, deadlift-405, and if u want to know clean i was doing 315. i ran a 4.7 40. i was undersized for a middle linebacker. i was 5'8 about 215 and probably the smallest MLB in our league, but i hit like a truck, i was recruited by alot of schools.
I'd rather do something I love badly, than feel bad about not doing something I love- Sylvester Stallone.

Why is it that so many HS athletes are 'running <4.6'?? 4.6 is an incredible time! Many NFL players (LBs and RBs and WRs) do not make 4.6 40 yard times. Again, hand-timed is about as accurate as guessing your 40 yard dash. What human can stop a clock within a couple 1/100th's of a second? No human.

I was on one of the consistently best 5A teams in my state (Minnesota) and I don't know if you guys all played football in texas or something but size isn't a huge issue in high school football. Our linebackers were only about 170lbs. and they did fine, their lifts were nothing amazing either. I was the second strongest kid on the team and my lifts were 325 bench, 430 squat, and 455 deadlift at a weight of 215 as an offensive lineman. Most of the other players were nowhere even close to that and we had some players that went to D1 schools and a lot go to other smaller colleges (me included).
EDIT: And about the hand timed 40s. Me and a buddy timed eachother in 40s and all of our times were within .2 of eachother, with the best times being the earlier runs of course since we were less tired. Hand timing is fine if you do multiple runs.Last edited by MaxxBot; 08-31-2007 at 10:04 PM.

Depends on the team really. Our school's team..well we don't have a JV team, just a frosh and a Varsity team. Pretty much everyone on the frosh team is <160lbs and bench like 120, probably have never been in a squat rack before. I dont follow that but on Varsity our starting LBs are 5'10, 175 (benching 215 maybe).....5'8 175 (benching 225)....5'11 205 (benching 230), only stats I know unfortunately

you all sounds like idiots posting these numbers like they acually mean something. the average size od a d1 linebacker is 195 being the fast outside linebacker to 230 being the bigger milddle linebacker and those lifts dont mean anything cause thats not what your being recruited for. they recruit athletes

some of these numbers seem a little bit high but i played football in upstate new york section 5 AAA, but even if your the strongest kid on the team that doesnt mean your going to be the best you have to have some kind of ability.
but I was on the small side too i was only 5'8'' 155 but i put up good numbers to make up for itwhen it comes to the weight dont struggle, just lift
