    Whey protein for high cholesterol?

I have high cholesterol & triglyceride levels and need to go on a low fat diet. This means my daily protein intake will probably go down quite a bit. Will taking whey protein daily make up for this deficiency & possibly lower my cholesterol at the same time? I read somewhere that whey can do this.

Btw, I'm not overweight- it appears to be a mostly genetic condition. I haven't weight trained or exercised in years, so that may be part of the problem as well.

How is a low fat diet and a low protein intake related? I don't see the link. I have a virtually ZERO dietary cholesterol intake on some days and I still consume a very high protein diet on those days.

Whey will not lower your cholesterol by any appreciable sum, although it is a decent protein source. Supplements are supplements, though, not replacements. Find alternative protein sources.

Genetically high cholesterol levels are tough to lower but high soluble fiber diets, high vegetable diets, some of these are reputed to help. Controlling saturated/trans fat intake may help as well, although if you are eating right "controlling" these two fats shouldn't be an issue.

Dude...if you have high triglycerides...you can probably get a description for fish oils! Are you taking any? If so, how much?

This obsession with fish oil is driven by marketing, interpretations on a handful of studies (far from conclusive) and the idea that if something is "natural," it must be safe/good for you.

Fish oil is NOT GOING TO SOLVE ALL OF YOUR HEALTH PROBLEMS.

Man...you are one petrified dude, lol! There ARE solid studies on how beneficial fish oils are. What do you mean "far from conclusive" ?? Have you ever heard of EPA/DHA? ANd thats not good for your body right? Go learn yourself something.
    Make sense.

Im not saying it solves all your health problems, but if you have high triglycerides, fish oils will help out big time.

I just got a prescription for fish oil. Looks like I'll be taking 4 grams a day.

Well, I get a lot my protein from dairy products-(milk, cheese, etc..) and eggs, which are high in saturated fat. Avoiding them will drop my overall protein intake, unless I replace them with something.

rule of thumb: cholesterol is in anything that has/had a face!!

to lower cholesterol, eat lots whole grains (oatmeal), stay active. for protein, just go by how many grams your doc reccomends.
my hubby has high cholesterol and is reccommended no more than 300 grams (miligrams?)per day.
as for the whey, check your labels. we were buying whey but it had a lot of cholesterol (remember, whey is from milk which is from a cow (has a face) lol)
so we checked around and found that whey protein isolate only has 2 grams cholesterol per serving verses the 50 grams per scoop!

Its Dietary cholesterol. Doesn't translate directly into blood cholesterol.
Why would you follow what your doc says? You don't know protein by mg or G? lol! Why is he recommending 300 G of protein? How much does your husband weigh?

Fish oil prescribed by a doctor...interesting. The research on that is fairly controversial, and I happen to be an incredibly skeptical....a ton money is at stake in the supplement industry and they're so loosely regulated these days (almost not even regulated).

    Anyhow...

I still don't understand why you think you need to somehow lower your protein intake because you are going on a low-fat diet when there are plenty of foods out there low in saturated fat but also high in protein. You don't even need to avoid dairy products. I take it that you have been consuming full-fat dairy products - well, switch to lower or nonfat products - not a huge switch. Consuming foods high in soluble fiber is also reputed to lower cholesterol - these are grains such as barley, oats, and fruits and vegetables, mostly. Of course, you can consume plenty of lean cuts of meat without worrying about going on "low fat."

Finally, eggs are not particularly high in saturated fat (2g or so in a large egg) - they're not a particularly fat rich food to begin with. A couple here and there will not do anything at all. Unless you have an exaggerated reaction to dietary cholesterol, that is - some people do...and in that case, there is egg whites.
