I understand hobbies can make you a well rounded person, but do they not understand how little time the average person has? Typical schedule is 8 to 5. Gym 530 to 630. Dinner at 7. At that point it's just catching your breath. Then getting ready for bed at 9. Repeat Monday - Friday. And that's for someone who's single with no kids.

Very casual things like maybe hit the beach or go to a local event. I don't have any real hobbies because I don't have the time or money.

Shouldn't make a difference kids or no kids. When I was a kid it was normal for us to just walk (unsupervised) to a friend's house to hang out, or get together as a group to go bike riding. By my teens, no one wanted to have their parents driving them from place to place. We made our own way via public transport. The helicopter parenting these days is so weird.

But yes who the fuk wants to waste their weekend on doing organised crap? Hikes were the worst. Brb wake up early Saturday to drive to the middle of nowhere to walk around for 10 miles then only just making it back home on Sunday night.

In my experience the "high performers" are the people whose hobbies are work-related. For example, setting up work-related cookouts, selling patches and ribbons to support the unit, bake sales, the Christmas party, etc. Even if their other work is mediocre.

Basically they are trying to find out if you're just gonna be a lifeless wagie chasing the buck
Even though they prefer you'd be just that, still they like to think you are a human being so they ask if you have hobbies.
If hobbies align with your job, then that's a dream come true for companies.
If you have none, they might just think you will leave the job when bored so likely not to hire you.

I get up early and have 2 hours of farm chores, work 12-14 hours, come home after and have 2 more hours of chores, make dinner and go to bed. It’s 16-18 hours almost everyday. Yet you don’t have time from doing a basic bitch 9-5. Oh fck off
