In all honestly, I'm as in the loop or aware of this as any other of the Trump ordeals, which is not a whole lot... but from my cursuary, non-legal expert stance: Seems like a lot of these anti-Trump cases were done kind of to fan the flames or to appease certain people. The media has always gone so all-in on Trump, I can think back to 2016 with the "17 intelligence agencies" who all demanded Trump was in cahoots with Russia, that was kind of the start of it. Just a constant IA backed media smear job against Trump, and these trials are just the ultimate manifestation of it all.

And, that said, this isn't me trying to depict Trump as any saint or anything. At the end of the day, I think he's a fairly scuzzy guy and probably as guilty as others of at least some things... just not this criminal monstrous fiend he'd been portrayed as.

I don't have the OP figured out on this, mostly b/c I haven't really thought about it much. Also, I often find him charming and amusing, so I'm not going to dedicate much time to trying to unravel his thought-process. With others, it can be a lot easier, people who drank the media Koolaid and/or who were hyper-partisan to begin with, ready to accept anything that fills the blanks in their Black/White/Us/Them mindset.
