Have you ever been so far removed from civilization that it felt like a time warp? I remember driving through some backroads of rural South Carolina years ago, ended up 2 hours from the highway and there was NOTHING but cotton fields, abandoned/burned down farm buildings and literal dirt roads. Almost as if everyone fled the entire region in the 1960s. It felt eerie being so off the grid, knowing if anything happened I would have little chance of survival.
But even then I was probably at within 100 miles of a decent sized city.
What is the most remote place you’ve been to?
Flying over doesn’t count.

I went to Everest Base Camp back in March of 2022, still winter so I had beaten the tourist hellscape and the country was just opening back up after covid. Didn't see a car for two weeks, limited cell service, l lived with a Sherpa man the whole time.

idk if anywhere in the US is really that remote.
I remember being driven around Thailand, and that was way worse...
Wake Island, no wifi, a tiny airport, great weather and beaches and some old WW2 stuff
Flying doesn't count, but I've seen NK at night and the spratleys... would rather live anywhere in SC than either of those places

I think it was the native Reservation.
not sure, it was the late 80's before gps or cell phones.
I was new to driving and took a wrong turn in the country.
there was a train trestle with lots of graffiti.
a few buildings (boarded up)
a few mobile homes and houses.
1 or two looked like they were burned out yrs before.
most were boarded up.
chit in the streets and on the sides of the road.
i had not seen another soul for 30 mins.
just almost single lane winding roads in the woods.
But i knew there was route to the north that ran from my city to halfway across the state so i just kept heading north or near as i could tell based on time of day and position of the sun and was able to find the route and get home.

Middle of the Sahara desert, 5 hours from a big city. Hour away from a shithole oasis with mud huts and 2 or 3 single level "hotel"s.
Slept out on the sand under the stars, no noise besides a random airplane 50,000 feet overhead, and slight wind blowing the sand.
(not my pic but I've been to these pillars twice)

In the middle of the largest wilderness area in the lower 48, Frank Church. I actually have spent a lot of time in here. Mostly kayaking. You kayak 100 miles through it one way and 80 the next. Plus a bunch of side tributaries. I have hired planes to pick me up in the middle of wilderness places. Pay a company to drive your car from where you put on to where you takeoff. Selway river is also very remote. The Owyhee river drainage is actually more remote though. You are on your own, you are not getting help if you have issues.
I've kayaked most rivers in the state of Idaho over the last 20 years, been to some amazing placing running class 5 whitewater, living out of the kayak for a week or more. Just you, your kayak, your gear, food you brought and your skills as a kayaker.

Driving I-5 South from San Francisco to LA.
Easily a couple of hundred miles of absolutely nothing. No towns, no restaurants, no gas stations, and no people. In fact it was so remote that I couldn't even pick up a radio station in some parts of it."Do you think SHE actually felt like that was a sexual thing he was doing? She's like 6. Only an actual p3do would think that she thought he was groping her, too."
"Not that it's impossible to touch a minor inappropriately, but it is true that a 6 year old girl will not recognize someone putting a hand on their chest as groping, whether it is inappropriate or not."

"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Depends on the time of year. 4 Rivers lottery is prime time permits. Memorial day to labor day for Hells Canyon, Middle Fork Salmon, Main Salmon and Selway. Kayakers like to go in before permit season during high water which rafters avoid. You still need a permit but can grab one online relatively easy. Some rivers you can self issue a permit at the put in off season like Hells Canyon. Others you need to take care of it before hand even when not during the lottery permit season. Like the Middle Fork Salmon, Main Salmon. The weird part is running tributaries into these rivers. If you camp on that river you need a permit but if blow past and out in a day, you don't. Its a grey area. Those 4 rivers are the only ones with permits.
I just missed out on a Middle Fork Salmon because of obligations, a bunch of buddies took off yesterday.
