Wrestling will never be anywhere as cool as it was in the 90's ever again

The early 2000's WWF was alright. Shortly after they rebranded as WWE, it's been all downhill. They might be making more money than ever with the consolidation of most talent into one company that has become a global force. But there will never come another time when it's considered socially acceptable among normies to call yourself a pro wrestling fan, as it was for a very brief time in the 90's.

The matches now are more akin to Cirque Du Soleil than a competitive contest. Psychology is largely dead, a "good" match consists of kicking out of each other's finish 12 times. There is no difference between a headlock and a superkick. Wrestlers are far more athletic today, but I want see a fight not a high wire act.

Perhaps, but honestly I have more of a problem with the style of modern matches than the lack of capability of the wrestlers themselves. I'm sure there are plenty of guys the could have a more realistic combative match if the style were in demand.

But the WWE was never high on the type of match I like anyway...This match was on Velocity for crying out loud:

All i do is watch youtube clips of everything and some of the full length big time matches, and there is no doubt that it is better now than it ever has been. You're just holding onto childhood nostalgia.

Which a late 90s guy for sure.

Current product certainly is better than ever but I'd say still a shadow of the heights of the AA.

    - No real #2 major competition. There is no WCW with big stars and a popular rival show. Fuk AEW
    - The audience, while bigger than usual, is probably 1/3 of what it was back then
    - As good as Cody, McIntyre, Punk and the modern guys are, they're not up there with Hogan, Austin, (prime) Rock and such

I'll take what we got now -- it's actually good and wrestling hasn't been good for at least 15 years, but it's not at the level of the AA or even the 80s Hogan Era... but it is good, so let's enjoy that for what it is.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

enjoy this current product for what it is.

im sure if HHH gets new talent to work with and AEW kicks it up a few notches things might improve

Also we have to observe back then there was less wrestling on our television on weekly basis and far less PPV's overall...which made wrestling more appealing...sometimes less is more...

Most of the wrestling, styles and entertainment was new to the industry which made it more interesting...

But anyways...2000's, 2010's and 2020's were pretty cool too...

But anyways...2000's, 2010's and 2020's were pretty cool too...

For a very brief time during the 90's, when WCW was at the top of its game competing with WWF, it was almost socially acceptable to admit to most people that were a wrestling fan. That's how awesome wrestling was from about 1996 - 1999. The 90's prior to that was pretty great too. But regardless of how many tickets they sell and how much money they make today, it's still a social death sentence to go around talking about your wrestling fanhood in the mainstream. It's never going to be cool enough to get back to that level of acceptance that it was back in the 90's.

The main reason for that is that there's no truly quality characters anymore. I couldn't name a single WWE wrestler who has come out in the last 15+ years. Most people were at least somewhat aware of the biggest super stars of the 90's like Hogan, Sting, Goldberg, Cold Stone, and The Rock. Some others to a lesser degree. It's all about the full product now. Which, whatever, it makes money and that's cool, but it's still not the same as the 90's coolness.

Yeah like I said most of the cool stuff was done and dusted in 1990's only..when wrestling entertainment was its peak and something quite new to the fans..now it's like it's upto people if they want to watch it or not...and then there's a new generation of fans every decade...

i was very fortunate to be the right age (~10-12 years old) around those times and it was a lot of fun but honestly I'm getting tired of this type of narrative.

yes, attitude era was hot. no doubt. i just find a lot of fans won't allow themselves to enjoy the new stuff because they're so convinced it was better when they were kids. i find this with music a lot too. don't block yourself from new entertainment because you can't let go of the old days.

It won't and there's a lot of reasons.

The death of Kayfabe has a lot to answer for, you can't even SUSPEND your disbelief now

    Woke/PC stuff

Fans obsessed with hijacking the show and getting what they want and wwe caving to it

Not building enough stars, too much focus on one or max two guys, in the attitude era just think you'd have:

    Austin
    Rock
    Undertaker
    HHH
Then just below that Angle, Benoit, Big Show, Jericho etc and you could match any of them in a world title match and not be sure who was winning.

Now every title change is predictable and you see it a mile away

As well as hijacking shows the crowds now are ****.

It is what it is, you get the odd good show and there's the odd wrestler I follow, but the **** ain't must watch TV any more.
